IP Addresses and internet security (or lack thereof)

Post by c-square »

The old topic got locked before I could post my response to alicetama, so I'm starting a new topic.
alicetama wrote: about the phone IP thing: Oh... well... I'm not very good with some technology stuff... And also, I hope you don't mind me saying this, but the fact that you know about our IP adresses sort of freaks me out...

@c-square: damn you're smart.  :D You're almost like Conan.
Thanks!  I know a lot about computers (as I work with them), but not much about other areas that Conan knows.  As for people knowing your IP address, that's the internet for you.  It's not that hard to track someone if you know how to.  Your IP address is broadcast everywhere you surf, and it can often be used to determine not only what country you're in, but sometimes even what city.

In fact, there's an easier way to see what your IP address is.  It's logged every time you post here.  Go to one of your posts on this forum and look in the bottom right-hand corner.  You'll see an image that looks like this:

Beside that image will be your IP address.  Only you and the admins can see your IP address there.  For everyone else, it'll say "Logged".

lol IP address is nothing scary to be known, they only show which area/city you live in; to find out your exact address requires further tracing - probably like gathering data from your history but that's more on the hacking side - and like a hacker is really interested in a commonfolk's pc.  ::)

Only your ISP provider will know your house address from just looking at your IP address and they also have your entire browsing history since you first joined them. But they won't disclose any of your information due to privacy laws.

And since this is about IP addresses, i shall express my hate of living in the UK because of that darn Digital Economy Bill. For those of you that don't know, it's a new law where Ofcom (some telecommunications regulator) has the power to ask your ISP provider to terminate or slow down your connection if you are believed to have downloaded music, movies etc illegally - but damn this better not affect me downloading DC episodes/movies etc... but it probably will  :'(

Since we are talking about this:
I'm using a proxy right now to enter DCTP website. For an unknown reason, my connection gets stucked(Server got too much time to respond) when I try to access it, but I can access any other website normally.
I've tried everything to fix it and make it work again, but everything was useless...
I just hope tomorrow everything workd like it should work...
