Do you think they are overusing "Mysterious" characters?

Post by Brekclub85 »

What I mean by this question is, since Jodie's introduction in Volume 27, that was really the start of characters who we weren't sure of there intentions.  (Jodie, Akai, Eisuke, and now Okiya.)

This may just be me, and if you disagree with me, I'm fine with that, I feel Gosho's kind of overusing the mysterious character thing. I mean, Akai, Jodie, and Eisuke all turned out to be good guys, and if this pattern continues with Okiya, it won't be much of a surprise at all, IMO.

What do you guys think?

I will agree that it's a really tired trope that he keeps using.  It might just be something he's using to keep his audience as well.  A series as long-running and episodic as Detective Conan needs another hook to come with it, this time dealing with character mysteries rather than just murder mysteries.  However, it wore thin the second time around with Eisuke.  After that, you're pretty sure that any mysterious character he brings up is another ally.

The way Jodie and Akai were set up was enjoyable and clever, what with Gosho trolling readers into thinking they were both from the organization by using all that dialogue and switching between Jodie and Vermouth's perspective and having English sound effects in the background for both.  It was set up really well.  That arc remains my favorite.  It doesn't come off as strong second time around, however.

Eisuke's outcome was rather predictable by the series' point, as he really didn't seem like an ostentatiously suspecious character outside of family connections he didn't really have to do with.  Though I didn't predict the elaborate links of events in the organization that were connected to his family.  That was a nice touch, as was Eisuke figuring out that Conan = Shinichi and showing that he's quite observant and smart, physically clumsiness aside.    If he stops the misleads with this character, that will be perfectly fine with me.

Now with Okiya, you have a character that is probably one of the different sides of the same coin.  This appears to be a neat set-up for the end of the series and would make the finale more interesting.  If Gosho is a competant writer, he will allow that this character Okiya is unravelled as a member of the organization and acts as Shinichi's bridge to the final confrontation, that way Gosho would've finished using his misleads a long time ago and the series doesn't spiral in endless uses and abuses of tropes.  There's a good chance he won't do something so stupid, but you never really know.

I hope that Gosho knows better than to reveal him as another ally, as his misleads would become downright predictable at this point and won't be worth his readers' time.  His use of predictable tropes is what made Shinichi's Second Return last year a little empty.  He reused a scenario that readers recognized almost right away (and from a very landmark arc, at that) and the arc was left with mixed reactions at best.  I pray that he learned not to make THAT mistake again.  It wasn't awful, but it had a lot of potential to be something really interesting and fell a little flat to an impulse to recycle a plotline.

TL;DR: Overall, Gosho uses the trope since this is a mystery series, but it is agreed that he seems to be overusing it.  We don't exactly know with Okiya yet, but crossed fingers will hopefully ensure that he doesn't slip up and dive for the ALLY card and fall prey to his habit to recycle material.  The duality between him and Shinichi is too engaging to mess up simply to keep a series going.

For me, it's not the mysterious characters... It's the childhood memory plotlines.

Gosho just can't get enough of them. I swear, we're going to find out soon that Akai & Gin went to the same pre-school and competed with such passion over Vodka's affections.

er...quite honestly, I can only think of 3 times that this has happened. The Jodie one, the Kid one and the Heiji and Kazuha one that mattered for 10 seconds. Oh wait, there was also Ran and Agasa's first love...

Although, what I hate is when for some reason they are like "Hey, remember how awesome it was when we introduced a new character. Well, Shinichi has met them before! I know, isn't that CRAZY?!" nonsense that they did with Kaito Kid and Heiji. Especially the Kid one since it created a giant plot hole.

Usually those things happen when a bad guy is really a good guy, or if someone joins up on the good side, it's to introduce them.  When we saw it happen with Jodie, she teamed up with Conan.

Who will it be next?

I agree though the overuse of a shadow over a person, whom we don't know the identity of, peeves me a little bit.

You might want to investigate just how many times that's been used as a plot device, especially for revenge motives, chief.

after a while the "I'm gonna cry and explain my reasons for killing someone" moments just become too predictable and repeditive that I barely even pay attention to them at times.

Yeah. There's never anyone who's just like
"SCREW YOU ALL!!!!!" *pulls out gun and starts firing at random*

That would amuse me so very much. But noooo. There has to be some kind of angst involved with like, girlfriend-stealing or something.

Just had to throw that one out there.
So Haibara's "radar" goes off at odd times, right? And she thinks that it is linked to the Black Org, right?
But all of the times it's gone off, there have been FBI (or suspected FBI) members there...
So, it's an FBI radar.
H...Haibara
Just kidding.

It's a crime genre Anime. It's mysterious so you'll watch more to find out. They're a business. They have to make money.

I think you are wrong and are just trying to over think things in a desperate attempt to sound smart.

I'm only kidding, but yeah, the first part. It'll all eventually be resolved, it's just like a cycle.

I can never get enough of mysterious characters. I watch Conan, in the first place, for its mystery-side.

lol This actually really might happen, I can see that coming! I mean, there must be something between Akai and Gin...
