Main reason why I'm still not taking this too seriously: Conan will end in 2017. I don't think there's enough time for a rival character before the end of that year.

Also I don't approve of it being a rival for Ran's feelings, if entirely because I worry that would mean less Haibara. And anything that means less Haibara appearing in ANY way (even if it involves a love story/love triangle that hasn't been interesting for the larger part of a decade) is probably not a good idea.

Just wondering where you got this information. I couldn't find an article or news that say this fact.

Just looked over the 'clean' version, and I've gotta say I still feel as if Gosho is hiding Sera's gender. Probably just me, but that jacket really bothers me *knows from personal experience that a jacket can very easily hide even large breasts*

Sera is very nice for Conan there?? Quite unusual, because most of detectives always tell him (at the beginning) to go away or ignore him. But there it looks like Sera suggested to bring Conan to crime scene. Okay, you can say he/she's just a kind person, but which responsible adult will allow a child to see crime scene? There's something more there.

I think Sera knows that Conan is a detective (yeah, yeah, maybe from the newspapers etc.) and somehow I feel like she/he wants to prove Conan that she/he's a good detective too (just to impress him, but this will connected with knowing true identity of Conan - I dunno which teenage boy would like to impress an elementary kid) OR it's kind of trap - maybe she/he wants to provoke Conan to show his true face (BO?!?! O_O - wild guess).

As Abs. said - looks like only Chiba clasificied Sera as a male, so there's still many doubts about this character. Plus, Conan seemed to be kind of shocked/impressed/suspicious while the invastigation with Sera - it's totally different behaviour, he has never acted like that with Heiji, Hakuba etc. I'm not sure what is this - does he really treat Sera as a powerful rival (man instinct) or maybe he feels something is odd here (Sera's gender)? Hope we will get more information with translation.

He probably feels both ways. I'm actually starting to abandon my Okiya is Bourbon theory, and that Sera is really Bourbon. After all, it makes sense. Soon after boy detective disappeared, a 7-year old kid who could disactivate a bomb shows up? And besides, isn't Bourbon supposed to be a better detective than Gin?

If it were me, it'd probably be a bit of curiosity too (going with the first suggestion). I mean...I'd want to see a kid who could diffuse a bomb in action, not just the newspapers. As for a trap, that'd definitely be interesting.

I somehow missed Chiba xD Maybe it's because I was just skimming along, but I don't recall seeing him *cough* Anyway, moving on, Conan's reactions were definitely weird. I mean, for most of it he almost didn't even seem like Conan. To me, it's like the combination of not being used to being topped along with Sera's overall weird vibes just overwhelmed him and made him blank out. I personally think he feels something odd here as former 'rivals' he's treated them like 'FF, I don't like you' the entire time. While he has done that in the last file, it was only for a short time. Right now he's more like 'I...This...What's going on...? D:' I wouldn't be surprised in the least if the culprit is revealed, tries to escape and Conan is so shocked by being beaten that Sera/Ran has to deal with the person. Of course, with my guesses on the culprit, that wouldn't happen xD

As much sense as this makes (really, it does) there is one thing I wouldn't get, only one. If this were the case, why would Bourbon take so long to appear? I know it's Gosho, but still: if Bourbon is such a great detective, I'd think he'd come in earlier. Other than that, though, it would make sense.

Just out of curiosity, is it just that one panel that Chiba refers to Sera as a boy? If so...that's even more suspect xD That'd make a total of two panels over two files that refer to Sera as a boy *if I'm counting right*

1. I think I like to think it's a girl because of the "OMG GONNA STEAL RAN" thing xD To me that's happened many times already and Shinichi is gonna get her in the end, so there's not much fun. With a girl gunning for Shinichi, however...  ;)
2. I think he's already figured it out (at least I hope so, I mean...in the elevator he seemed to have it, and I can't imagine him taking a far step back). Or at the very, very least he just hasn't put Shinichi into the mix of his suspicions. Which I can't blame him for as he was there for the Ai=Conan Shinichi=Black Knight trick.

@Tanner-kun: Depending on view, the 'trap' could be either or

Now I'm sure that Sera is more interested in case and Conan than in Ran. She/He's way of talking like "I'm a detective like that little boy" (btw, how she/he knows? it seems like Sera has just arrived in Tokio, so she/he could come from anywhere), "Right, little boy?", "It's getting exciting, right, little boy?".
Besides, why she/he's talking to him "little boy" if she/he knows Conan's name? It's weird. I've a feeling that Sera really has a business with Conan - just as I said earlier, she/he knows him and wants to impress him or it's a simple trap. BUT~! Sera isn't better detective than Conan, they both solved the mystery in the same time (looks like, because a theory of murder will be shown in the next file). It's such a pity that Gosho didn't show Conan's thoughts about Sera, so we can judge only basing on his expression.

I definitely agree that Conan's reaction is the most confusing. Like many has said, Sera is acting as a rival with Conan, treating him equally, but Conan is the problem here, he was not like"Oh dear! why this person is talking to me differently? I have to be careful around?" or ask himself : Who on earth is this person? Sera is talking to Conan as if S/he knows his identity and Conan did not even try to act childish, he was not cautious!

I still have that feeling that Sera is a girl.
