In Vol. 12 this name change, which could possibly create some problems with critical points of the story, was covered up by having Richard mention that he was hung over from drinking "Melkior Gin" and "Kaspar Vodka" the night before.

In Volume 18 of the Japanese Manga, Conan and The Detective Boys apprehend a criminal gang known as The Silver Fox. Because the leader dress in black, Conan assumed she was part of The Orginazation. When asked if she had a codename like Gin or Vodka, she states "Sorry, but I stopped drinking a while ago". To cover up the name switch, her response to the names Melkior and Kaspar is, "Never heard of them".

I can't find any reason why the Japanese should pressure VIZ to change names.
Perhaps it was them, not VIZ, that thought this would be a good family show and that younger people couldn't handle the Japanese names.

"The energies of our system will decay; the glory of the sun will be dimmed, and the earth, tideless and inert, will no longer tolerate the race which has for a moment disturbed its solitude. Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. 'Imperishable monuments' and 'immortal deeds,' death itself, and love stronger than death, will be as though they had never been."

You know, I'm starting to think that the best thing about these name changes are how much whining and BAWWWing it's conjured up from some of the fans. ::)

With all this talk of "campaigns" and "hearing the voiced complaints of fans", it's as if this is about CMX's heavy editting of the edgy-action manga Tenho Tenge or the nutorious 4Kids One Piece dub, not name changes and a title that only affect a handful of things in the series.

The possiblity of VIZ going back through all 23+ books just to switch names that they've already applied changes to... they're too far into the series to make such a decision, I think.  It was easier for them to convert "Zoro" to "Zolo" back when the 4kids dub for One Piece came out, because only 4 volumes were released (the Zolo change started in volume 5) and they easily reprinted the first 4 that kept his original name spelling intact.  With 23 books out, it's not gonna be easy, or even doable at this point.  They can only, quite slowly, revert to original names of new characters as said characters begin to appear.

If the two license-holding companies are meant to enforce these changes on all products containing the indecia and characters pretaining to DC, they would have to comply, because the orders are given by TMS, one of the copy-right holding companies, who have more power over the property.  I know, I know.  "Well, TMS only manages the anime, not the manga!"   True, but does anyone really think TMS doesn't have enough power over their cashcow that they could use said power over publishing companies?   Well, Toei did when they yanked Sailor Moon's license and locked it; it didn't only include the anime license, the manga license got locked after Tokyopop was told to let the license expire.

Whether anyone buys the English version or not is the personal decision of the consumer and nobody else, however. ;)  If anyone wants to buy the Japanese version of the manga, I can provide a link or two.

Highly likely; after all, Viz has kept character names intact for a majority of their other properties, save for a few.

Well one is Ranma1/2. Viz didn't change any names, as far as i know, but the voices they used do not fit the character at all. I mean for example Ranma-chan's voice was a bit too girly. Unlike the Animax dub, and of course the original Japanese voice, it's more feisty rather than girly.

Not just "sometimes," all the time.
English voice actors should learn how to pronounce Japanese names first.  Don't tell me they can't.  My American friends in Japanese class can pronounce very well, given they haven't had prior knowledge.
I never like the English dub (except for 1 anime: Rurouni Kenshin): Eng voice actors not only can't pronounce Jpn names, they're bad at accentuation also - man, it sounds soooo awful, as if they were forced to get each word out!

Of course!
