Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
From reading this thread, I have to say... Yes, I agree greatly that Ran's character have problems. Not the crying though, in any case, even the more recent chapters, we don't see Ran cry as much before. Heck, she does have reasons why she cried. Even I for one can cry a lot, but besides that.
What I'm getting at is, yes, it is sometimes annoying when other characters tend to forget that she knows karate and she can defend herself. (Though, if the person has a gun... Then she might need help.)Another thing is she doesn't really have anything planned for her future self, as if she's gonna be just a 'house maid' for her own home. Yes there's karate championships, but you can only get so far with that. Her interests are lacking. Yes she can cook and she can do karate... But what about her spare time? Just daydream about Shinichi? Maybe Gosho can say she actually spends time watching Horror movies (which people who are extremely scared of horror do tend to watch/read anything to deal with it).
Now, do I hate Ran? No, far from it. I actually like her. Do I think her character needs more work, heck yes. Is Shinichi and Ran a bad couple? Seriously? The fact we bring this to the topic makes me wanna face palm. Yes, there are big problems with them being a couple. Shinichi is hurting her, he should've told her. She's daydreaming about him a lot even though she could've easily just left him cause there's more guys she can go out with. But a bad couple? Not exactly. They both do love each other (In real life, if two people both love each other, then yeah, that's awesome.) Regardless of what people may think, their personality is likable to each other.
Ran, a person who cares for others greatly who would even risk her life to save another, even if it's a criminal. (The Golden Apple case)And also very ambitious. Which, Shinichi admires. Shinichi, a person who is very intelligent, who can solve problems in a heartbeat, who cares about peoples lives. Yeah, something that Ran likes.
There are weird couples in the world and we are gonna complain about this one? This is the huge problem we have while there are more couplings that hurt each other, and even by physical pain? I'm sorry, but if you ask me, Shinichi and Ran being a couple is completely fine. Yes, we may not agree with it, but it's a better couple then what it could've been.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
One of the main biggest reasons why Gosho portray Ran as we see in DC, Ran is a typical Japanese woman. She will be house maid and so on. At this point, Ran is Gosho's dreamy wifey to be --which annoy me a lot. For OVA 9, I agree with Sonoci's previous posts. Ran seems having no life only waiting for Shinichi in ten years. This is not a healthy relationship. You have to move on and get better life.
I am so grateful because Gosho decided to put Agasa/Fusae into an end. Their relationship will go nowhere. You cannot stick with old memories forever. You dont need ten years to make your first love remember your promise. It wont work in real life. They barely know each other.
Who said that we only need love in relationship? Shinichi/Ran will get hard times in their future. They dont talk in same levels without misunderstanding. Hopefully they wont end up like Kogoro/Eri. It's only fiction though if ShinRan will happen in real life, I bet they will split up in months.

Ran can be Shinichi's perfect wife because Gosho made her for its purpose.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
I don't disagree that there are many worse examples in fiction or otherwise. The fact that they are a flawed couple in love is not my problem. It's the fact that they are a flawed couple in love, and the writing doesn't seem to know these flaws. Not anymore at the very least. In general, I'm very much about self-awareness in fiction, I can often allow a ton as long as the writing knows why something is a problem. And the lack of it nowadays for this, outside of an incresingly rare line about it from Haibara (last time she mentioned that I swear was right after the London case, aka the last time I was given a reason to continue to be invested in the couple) is really what's hurting it. They are now pretty much being written as a future couple that is perfect, which is just not believable. I'm reminded of School Rumble, an entire series that was about how stupid idealistic teenage romance can be. Just because you think you're in love at age 17 doesn't mean everything will be perfect if you are with that person. It really is about how you write it. Depending on the writer, Ran and Shinichi could be the greatest love story in anime since Eureka 7 or worse than Twilight.
I need to bring this up again, there really needs to be more scenes with Shinichi and Ran actually talking to each other. It would help a lot.
And I don't want to say this because it's kind of a cheap answer, but there being worse couples out there doesn't mean this is necessarily a good couple.

This is a Conan website, what other couple would we talk about? And tbh, this is the only major couple in the series that I have major issues with that are worth this level of discussion. (and the only thing worth even talking about for the Chiba story would be how annoying it was that it was introduced in the middle of a needlessly large plot drought)Miaharpy wrote: There are weird couples in the world and we are gonna complain about this one?

Why do people dislike Ran?
Exactly! That's what I've been thinking. But using Ova 9 as an example of what Ran will do after 10 years is not that accurate. It was all in Shinichi's dream and it's not even canon. Sonoko as Mouri's assistant is just ridiculous, to be honest haha.magnolia88 wrote:One of the main biggest reasons why Gosho portray Ran as we see in DC, Ran is a typical Japanese woman. ^^^Yeah about the only good thing that can be said is that it's non-canon, but the fact that it's a dream even still is unsettling as it only further idealizes Shinichi's selfishness.
I mean looking at the dream as an indicator, it seems like he'd rather have Ran wait forever and be miserable, rather than moving on and being happy without him. Now of course it could be dismissed as non-canon, but then there's the previously mentioned fact that he discouraged Eisuke from approaching her with his own feelings.

The Mystery of Conan Edogawa.
Arguably one of the best attempts at tackling the story of "Ran discovering the secret behind Conan". It's strong point is taking a common plot for Detective Conan fan fics and presenting it in a fresh manner such as:
- Touching on things that aren't dealt with in the show or discussed much.
- While there is some understanding towards Conan's predicament, the fic doesn't ignore the problematic approach he takes towards keeping quiet.
So, do yourself a favor and read this. I only wish I could so something half as decent.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
It saddens me very much when people think like that. I personally think the past is VERY important and it is wrong to always put the tender memories of childhood in a secondary position when compared to the future plans. Also, never moving on from a first love is a thing a admire greatly, if it isn't an abusive relationship (on the other hand, if it gets abusive, then it isn't love anymore I think). Maybe it wouldn't work in real life, but I hope it will work in DC as a work of fiction. I also hope the Agasa/Fusae story will have a happy ending too.magnolia88 wrote:Ran seems having no life only waiting for Shinichi in ten years. This is not a healthy relationship. Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
Fusae/Agasa will work if Gosho gives them time to know each other. But seeing how Gosho manages romance, it will kind of forced relationship. First love is always sweet but.. in their story, it's been fourty years for God's sake. During the years, Fusae only sent some codes to Agasa and waited for him-- could she just call him and say hello or what. Ok, it's only fiction, but this is how Gosho portrays love and patience. Woman should wait for man and just receive everything without complaining. Dont take it wrong, Fusae/Agasa will become the greatest childhood story in DC universe but.. that it is.Mario2000 wrote:It saddens me very much when people think like that. It's an oxymoron when Gosho stated that DC is love and comedy detective manga which focused on LOVE (and I hate his version of romance)

I only state my agreement on Sonoci's comments for OVA 9, not giving an example for ShinRan relationship. Yeah, even in Shinichi's dream, he just wanted to see Ran wait for him like forever; did he think about her happiness once? This is not love, babe --it's only your selfishness and ego.jalex26 wrote:Exactly! That's what I've been thinking. Even this is not canon but I can see this will be happening if Ai never finds antidote. It's Gosho's fault then
But if Ran loves to wait for him like forever, I have no complaint here. I dont care about their relationship because Ran lets Shinichi treat her like that... so just let it be.

I agree that it's not right when it's only women that have to wait and take everything like that, but I think Shinichi would have done the same for her.magnolia88 wrote:Ok, it's only fiction, but this is how Gosho portrays love and patience. When he prevented Eisuke from telling Ran about his feelings, I don't see it as egoistical. It would be if his love for Ran wasn't mutual and he knew that, but in this case I am sure he just doesn't want to lose the person he loves and who loves him.
However, I agree that with the story becoming so long, some things (especially those linked to romance) start seeming absurd and not as they were originally intended.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
Just a thought I've always wanted to throw in on the character front:
If you think about it, there actually aren't many examples of fully fulfilled characters in Conan. Over time, it seems that all of the central characters eventually grow boring as far as the fanbase is concerned because of the obvious: In Conan, once a character has settled into their role, they don't change. Some take a while to really exhaust their original premise (Haibara), but after a while, they're just kind of there to be along for the ride. The reason for this is that Gosho doesn't really place a lot of emphasis on developing existing characters but rather introducing new ones. That's why I don't really fault characters like Ran, Kogorou, Agasa, Haibara, Sonoko, James, Camel, etc. for being "dull" or whatnot, mostly because I never expected them to really fill any other role than the one they filled after their introductions were complete.

To be perfectly honest, I don't see any difference between the potential of Ran and Ai when it comes to a hypothetical and non-existent acting career.
Fiction sometimes asks you to step outside of your comfort zone. Different cultures have different ideals, which might not be in line with what your ideals are.magnolia88 wrote:One of the main biggest reasons why Gosho portray Ran as we see in DC, Ran is a typical Japanese woman. I'm not sure I understand what you're suggesting. Is Ran being portrayed as a typical Japanese woman, or is she the manifestation of Gosho's ideal wife, or is she both?
Not only do I not think the OVAs should be taken seriously because they are not canon, I also think they shouldn't be taken seriously because the the majority of the stories in them are made out of basic "fan-ficy" ideas without that much thought put into them. For OVA 9, I agree with Sonoci's previous posts. Ran seems having no life only waiting for Shinichi in ten years. This is not a healthy relationship. You have to move on and get better life.
Based on what are you stating that? Based on your ideas of how relationships should/would/need to work?Who said that we only need love in relationship? Shinichi/Ran will get hard times in their future.
I apologize for being blunt, but such a statement is basically meaningless and has no place when discussing the merits and effectiveness of fiction. You are creating a "real-life" hypothetical situation, and then decide how it would go and what its consequences are based on your opinion on how it would go.if ShinRan will happen in real life, I bet they will split up in months.
Not to mention there's a logistical difficulty regarding the notion of a "ShinRan" happening in real-life in the first place.
People have no control over the events that occur in their dreams, so regardless of the "un-canon-ness" of that ova, you are now criticizing a character based on something beyond their control.magnolia88 wrote: did he think about her happiness once? This is kinda stepping into the level of pretentiousness. You have no way of knowing for certain what will happen if Ai doesn't make an antidote. I also don't understand why you judge Gosho based on something he didn't actually do.Even this is not canon but I can see this will be happening if Ai never finds antidote. It's Gosho's fault then

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
I don't really get the idea of Ai being a great actress. I mean, really? a scientist? The only reason why you won't be sad if Ran cried is because you don't like her, if you don't like a person, no matter what they do, you'll not be happy. Remember Ran was the one who was asked to perform in a movie, but there was a case back then so it was canceled.magnolia88 wrote:Ran doesnt have great personality enough to be actress. And i'm sorry to say this, but your idea of Ran being a typical Japanese house maid is a little disrespect IMO. That was what most of Japanese women would do, they respects their husband and takes care of their families. You said it like house maid are all useless and should not be respected. In the story, it has been a few months, not even a year, so your idea of Ran break up with Shinichi is not satisfied. The funniest thing is that Ran and Shinichi would split up in months in real life, how can you be so sure about that? Just because they wait for each other for eternal, doesn't mean they should spit up. That's what true love is. I know so many man/woman still wait for their love to come back, despite many years has passed, some even wait until death. It's silly, but that's love. And the last thing, sometimes old memories are what make you respect and remember forever, i think man should stick with good memories, and move on with bad memories, it is the motivation to become greater and greater in the future.
And if you see her character boring, then please be patient and wait my friend, cause when she finds out about the truth, she might get all the spotlight and those who dislike her would regret about saying why Ran is so this so that so lack of characteristic bla bla bla..

Not everybody can be that strong to handle seeing the person they love being happy with somebody else. Maybe he can't just get along with the possibility of a future without Ran. Somebody may find it egoistical, I don't, but anyway Shinichi's strongest characteristics are in the detective/investigation field, so his actions in the romance/love one may not be perfect.Antiyonder wrote: Except as you said, he knows that Ran loves him, so shouldn't he trust that she'd would turn Eisuke down herself, and you know respect her as an independent person?
