I think they will either go the good route and have Ayumi make a nickname for Ai OR the bad route and make Ayumi unable to pronounce Ai's last name, and have her finally say it in the end.

THAT case is untranslatable; I have written about about it in my blog.

English may be better, many English-translated manga retained honourifics.

they shouldn't have changed the names... it made so many fans angry... jimmy doesn't suit shinichi...

shin'ichi means "one truth".
what's jimmy supposed to mean? i suppose they got it from jimmy neutron? ugh.

The kanji used to spell Shinichi's name mean "new" and "one" in that order. "Truth" can be read as "shin" but that's not the kanji used.

Actually, the exact meaning of his name is New-the-First[born son]. Numbers in Japanese names, without evidence to the contrary, means his position in the couple's male offspring.
