Wow, what a mystery that was. A lot of great elements and twists in there. Also had no idea that Malbolge is real; figured it was made up for the episode before a buddy pointed it out.

Re: Elementary (CBS)
yeah, although I recall thinking that I didn't quite like how the episode explained it, because iirc they made it sound like Malboge had some legitimate purpose as a hard to crack language. Which I mean, it is hard to crack, but it's purely a "for funsies" language, like Brainfuck, Whitespace, or Shakespeare. Not to mention, unless the juror was able to write the program down and study it outside of court, it would be impossible for him to just glean what the program did then and there . But really, you can never really trust TV's portrayal of computers anyway, so eh.Jd- wrote: Wow, what a mystery that was. A lot of great elements and twists in there. also, I wasn't really that big a fan of the format of this episode (and a few other episodes as well), where they never really take the time to build up a complex mystery which gives the viewer time to think it out for themselves, because each new piece of the mystery tends to be immediately resolved so that it can lead to the next piece.
I mean it's still a fun show to watch, but I just wish the viewer was given the chance to solve the mystery as a whole before being told the answer, as the BBC series is geared more towards.

I agree with the first half, not the second. Personally, I've been able to figure out most of the episodes before the conclusion. At least 3 by the mid point. I've been only completely stumped twice, and they were the two most recent episodes.Akonyl wrote:yeah, although I recall thinking that I didn't quite like how the episode explained it, because iirc they made it sound like Malboge had some legitimate purpose as a hard to crack language. Re: Re: Re: Elementary (CBS)
hence why I said "this and a few others", not "all"
but anyway, my point wasn't really that it was impossible to find out who the culprit was (because yeah, for a fair bit of the previous episodes I could figure what was going on/ who the culprit was), but that the show likes to "solve" evidence almost as soon as it's presented. So, rather than going "here's pieces of evidence A, B, and C, now we'll slowly elaborate on these as the mystery starts to fall into place", it feels more like "we found evidence A, what's that mean? Oh, it means this, which leads us here, to evidence B. And once that's solved, we've found evidence C!". Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but at times it just feels less like an actual mystery show and more like CSI:Sherlock.
There's also been at least one time when Sherlock makes use of evidence that was never shown to the viewer (unless it was just a shot that I missed), in the episode where he found out the guy was blind in one eye by the smudge marks above his bed. While we saw Sherlock investigate the room, and saw him look up, I'm pretty sure we didn't actually get to see what was on the ceiling, and I don't think that's the only time they've done it (although I can't recall the other exact instances).

I totally agree. That's where BBC's Sherlock excelled, by giving us the evidence flippantly and giving meaning to it later in an organised and SHERLOCKIAN way. Seeing this makes me feel like its some cliche' predictable crime drama like Castle...Akonyl wrote: hence why I said "this and a few others", not "all"

Re: Elementary (CBS)
Caught up to episode 8. I like it so far, but it's taking me a lot to get used to Watson's character. I'm kind of irritated on how she keeps on pushing for "intimate connections", but I like how she's an action-smart Watson. XD Elementary is the real deal as a mystery show alright, but it would've been okay on its own, I mean, plot-wise and even character-wise since I don't really see any major Holmish references (except for the drug addiction, beekeeping thing, might be missing some things though). It would've been still as good as a detective series even without getting stuff from the Sherlock Holmes canon, I think. Hm. But then again it's another House.
