Dragon Rage... the attack that does 40 damage no matter what?  On things that likely have 150-220 HP?  And Ice Beam on a guy with horribad special attack?

If you can win with that, without spamming hyper potions... then this game is even easier than I thought, and I demand a "hard mode" for gen5.  Bad enough that you can sweep the entire game with the water starter for every generation.

It might be Dragon Pulse. I can't remember. Ice Beam tends to 1-hit KO, though. what does special attack have to do with how much damage your supereffective attacks do? Did you mean special defence?

Admittedly, it's not good against his Charizard (that's what Hydro Pump is for), Aerodactyl (ditto) or Gyarados (Raichu). His second round team are bastards, though. That Garchomp generally requires a couple of Avalanches to kill.

Special attack determines how strong your special attacks are.  Effectiveness is just a multiplier for that strength.  So, Gyarados would be doing rather poor damage with Ice Beam since his special attack is crap.

I thought you were talking about Lance's pokemon's special attack (as implied by "icebeam on a guy"...) Mine is fine. I dunno, I've never bothered with the maths of the game, but it works. I've KOed his Dragonites before with Gyarados using Ice Beam.

Then you're either far more leveled than he is, your Gyarados has a +SpAtk nature, or Lance's Dragonite has a -SpDef nature.  At the same level, with a neutral nature for both, max EVs in special attack for Gyarados and no EVs for Dragonite, the most damage it will do is 98.8%, with a minimum of 81.9%.  Of course, this also assumes maximum IVs for both, which isn't likely for either side.  As both IVs go down, assuming an equal level yet again, the damage percentage goes up, but only slightly (though it does provide a chance for a OHKO).

As their levels go up, yet remain equal, the percentage of damage done gets lower.

How should I know? As I said, i've never bothered with the maths. Takes all the fun out of it. I go with what works, and for whatever reason, Gyarados' Ice Beam has always worked. Sometimes it needed 2 when its levels were lower, but these days it can KO.

Meh, they need a "hard mode" or "realistic mode" for me to have more fun with it.  I mean, you can seriously sweep the entire game with just the Water Starter.  I do it when I import the games.  Did it in Gold with Feraligatr and did it in Pearl with Empoleon.

And I don't even want to get into the idea of this supposedly region threatening organization that can't seem to supply its members with anything stronger than Koffings or Raticates, yet still supposedly pose legitimate threats.

I agree with that. Having only Blastoise or Feraligatr were enough to beat all the game.

There's a 5% chance that a Wild Chansey will have one.  Good luck with finding one.

It is kinda pathetic. I'm not sure how they're so "powerful" when they're weaker than most of the latter-end Gym Leaders, with the exception of Giovanni who WAS a latter-end Gym Leader :P

Fixed that for you.

a Tyranitar (in Fire Red) is comparable with Giovanni's Nidoking and Kangaskhan.
even its type is rock/dark, it can learn Surf,Flamethrower, and Thunder Fang, also some Dragon-type moves.
its sand stream could reduce a bit of opponent's HP.
