Re: The Tales Thread
I haven't played much of the Tales series, though my friends have. At least one of my friends REALLY loves it, and follows the happenings of the series, has some version or other of pretty much all the games, that sort of thing. Me? My first introduction to it was Tales of Symphonia on the GameCube. I LOVE that game. It's totally awesome! I first started out playing along with friends--not being the one in control of the lead character. When Sheena joined the party, I insisted on playing her (my friends hadn't used her much the first time around, because no one was all that interested in playing her and she's not that good right out of the gate). My reasoning? She looked like me (big boobs, wore purple--my favorite colour--and dark hair about the same length as mine). So I played Sheena pretty much the whole way through the game...ended up deciding to get the game myself. I always play Sheena and actually have a little trouble when I'm stuck playing Lloyd for whatever reason, and I've been working my way through trying to get all 8 endings and all the completion stuff--having trouble with some of the titles and weapons and such. "Gung-ho" is going to be a MAJOR pain because of my play style. ~_~*
Well, I actually haven't played it in a while now....currently because I lent it to my brother (who got the second game but wanted to play through the first one) but initially because I played it so much that my GameCube got sick of it. Litterally it would NOT play that one game. Anything else played fine, but if I tried to play ToS it'd freeze. Weirdest thing. I know I had at least a good 200+ hours on my game, too....what with the replays and all....
Now I must pester my brother to give me back my game so I can play it again......

The Case of the Midnight Channel
"When a strange letter summons the Mouri family to Inaba, Ran is expecting a case. She's not expecting it to involve the TV, though.
If Naoto investigated everyone who came to visit Inaba, she'd have little time for real cases. When Yukiko reports that the Midnight Channel is back, however, she starts to wonder if the visitors are connected. Especially when the image clears, unveiling yet another mystery."

Short version: I'm taking various DC/MK characters to Inaba (where Persona 4 takes place) and dropping them through the TV to face their Shadows!

Re: The Tales Thread
Er, Symphonia is the only one I've really played. ~_~* I tried the second Symphonia game--got pretty far into it, too--but I ended up giving up because I can't stand the two new characters, and I wanted to play Sheena again.
My brother agreed to give me back my game on Saturday...so I will probably play it again soon.....nwn

No, really.. TotA is a good game, unfortunately they fail to keep the tension during the 1/2 way of the series...Akonyl wrote:TotA was a good game but I was not a fan of the ending.baka1412 wrote: Tales of Destiny II for PS1... FTW

There was the time when i couldn't let go of the controller for 10 hours or so when the story get sooo interesting...
But after half way of the game, the only things that you do was just keep on re-visiting some old place you've already been before..
Still, ToD II FTW ! I remember playing that game with my brother (2-players RPG game were rare at the time), and spend more than 100hours of game-time playing it
Spoiler: for the record

Re: The Tales Thread
I think I only played a little bit of 1 or 2 of the other ones other than Symphonia or Phantasia(although only Tales of the World (or whatever that 360 one is) seems to be worthwhile when talking about any Tales game made after Symphonia)
My opinion of Phantasia: I played Symphonia first so to me in some ways this felt like Symphonia if it was made in the mid 90s. The characters were really fun, even if they didn't have as much dialogue as Symphonia. The story was very well done, especially for 1995 (2006 when I played it but whatever! :P). The soundtrack (mainly the Super Famicom version) is simply beautiful and the graphics are the best ever for SNES as far as I'm concerned (in some ways the graphics are like Chrono Trigger's but better). And the game is just incredibly fun from beginning to end. I have little else to say really. This and Symphonia could be hilarious at times but Symphonia has better humor. Probably.
The Arche bonus game after beating the game was a bucket full of win btw.
My opinion of Symphonia: First of all, it doesn't help that the first time I played it, I got stuck early in Tethealla because I didn't realize about titles (and how powerful titles are) and then the 2nd time, I only died against 2 bosses (over and over again) and the game was kinda easy. The characters were better in some ways and worse in others. While the larger amount of dialogue and the voice acting made me like the characters more, I honestly think the Phantasia characters were as good without doing or saying as much. The gameplay is as good as Phantasia imo. The music isn't as amazing but the game still has a beautiful soundtrack and the Escape the Base song and some of the boss themes are addicting as hell. Graphics were good for GCN, nothing more, nothing less. Anime cutscenes are fun. I hate Namco for having less anime cinematics compared to the japanese version. I hate Namco for having less voice acting than the original. In fact, to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of voice acting in games with so much dialogue unless like 90 percent of the dialogue has voice acting (not including minor, completely unimportant NPCs of course).
But the reason Phantasia is better is simple. Disk 2 of Symphonia was dissappointing. The story seemed to be going in a great direction since the beginning but a lot of the plot twists in the last 1/3 of the game did a lot to make me dislike the story. Also, maybe it's because I haven't played the game in years but, didn't the game kinda fail at subtlety when it came to the half-elves racism stuff?

Re: The Tales Thread
You do realize that it wasn't Namco that brought Symphonia over, right? I'd have to check, but I believe Nintendo bought the rights to bring it over on their own because the GCN didn't have very many RPGs (let alone really good ones, ToS is the only truly good GCN RPG I'm aware of). You can tell the difference if you look at the second ToS game, which is out for the Wii--that has all the higher-rating stuff (Zellos was SERIOUSLY toned down in the first game) and the voice acting for the Z-skits is back.kkslider5552000 wrote: My opinion of Symphonia: First of all, it doesn't help that the first time I played it, I got stuck early in Tethealla because I didn't realize about titles (and how powerful titles are) and then the 2nd time, I only died against 2 bosses (over and over again) and the game was kinda easy. I dunno, I rather liked the story. Or maybe I just love the characters so much that the failings of the story didn't bother me. Perhaps it's just because I haven't played Phantasia.
Honestly, I bought the GCN system so that I could play Symphonia, and I don't regret it in the slightest. Probably play it some more this weekend--have to wait until Saturday to get the game back from my brother.
