from what I understand, it means both lover and arch-enemy depending on how it is used. It was hinted he was talking about his lover during the James Black case (or Vermouth from what I originally thought he meant) but it ended up being Gin he was talking about.

Ah, no.  This was a prime example of:

*Also interesting to note is that Aoyama often uses the kanji to denote what the characters actually mean, while the furigana is used to indicate what they actually pronounced.

So a random passerby hearing manga-Akai speak would actually think he is talking about his lover/sweetheart/beloved...  Well, except for the whole shooting thing.

Yes, but in dead tree form.  Also, haven't used my scanner in ... probably 10 years and even if I knew where it was, doubtful it'd still be operable.  I could perhaps...  Take a photograph of it.
