10 games, you say...

well to be honest I don't play a whole lot of games anymore, so this will be my lifetime favorites, even if they don't interest me as much anymore.

1: World of Warcraft. Even though I don't play it anymore, this game deserves nothing less than first place solely because of how much time I played it. When it comes to non-pirated games that cost money, this is close to the most cost-effective $$$/hour gave I've ever played, and it was awesome.

2: Dragon Warrior Monsters 2. Awesome GBC game, I clocked in over 170 hours on it and it only cost me $30. Not sure if this was more cost-effective than WoW or not. Also, Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 is included in this spot as well, but I lost that cart so oh well.

3: Morrowind. Aww yeah. Yet again, so many wasted hours, so many awesome times. And the modding was ridiculous and fantastic.

4: CAEV STROY !1!!1 Cave Story is the most awesome free platformer I've ever played. If this sentence can convince you, go get it if you haven't played it. I never even beat the last boss because he kicked my ass a few times and I never bothered beating him, but the entire game was awesome.

After this point, these are all pretty tied. I may be missing something in here but these are what come to mind.

5: Super Smash Bros: Melee. The only fighting game I've ever really liked. Brawl is fine too, but I don't have a wii so I'm not good at it. Also, the Jigglypuff in Brawl is bad so I like Melee better.

6: Chrono Trigger. Sweet game, only RPG I've ever replayed more than once. I'll stick Chrono Cross here also, because that game was also awesome as well.

7: Zelda: A Link to the Past. SNES Zelda goodness. Maybe I'd put OOT in here as well but to be honest I always lost interest in OOT by Death Mountain (yes, right after the Deku Tree).

8: Kirby Superstar. Two player Kirby goodness, aww yeah. Awesome games. Also, I would put Kirby's Dream Course here because I LOVED THAT GAME SO MUCH but I only ever rented it so I can't say I would love it that much if I actually owned it.

9: Metroid Prime. An FPS that lets you lock on to things, and has awesome graphics and music? Sign me up.

10: Super Mario Sunshine. People gave it a bad rap for being too bright and sunny and "HELP MARIO CLEAN LOL", but seriously, if those are your qualms with a Mario game, you're playing Mario for the wrong reasons. Pretty much an improvement over M64, and lots-o fun.

Hey I remember that game ^_^.  Though mostly because my friends dragged me on it so I can play the songs on the piano.

Hey, I have an idea, let's have a THIS SUCKS / NO THIS SUCKS / NO YOU / NO YOU argument for a couple pages, that will really be great. - Ingmar

Here it is, my top 10 after careful consideration..feel free to argue lol ;) I'm sure some of you will

1.) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - In a time where Halo was considered the greatest shooter, maverick infinity ward decided to stray away from WW2.  A mix with an RPG like levelling system into a FPS multiplayer = crack.

2.) Elder Scrolls Oblivion - One of the greatest WRPGs; there was just so much to do!! And for it's time, it was pretty amazing that every NPC had their own agenda programmed depending on the day/time.

3.)Bioshock  - Incredible atmosphere and story telling, revolutionized single player games with its audio diaries.

4.) Counter Strike:  Source - I have no idea how many hours I dedicated into this game.  It just has that visceral feel that connects you with your weapon: the sound of a sniper one shotting someone and just the feel of the game is brilliant.  To think that this was simply a mod to start.

5.)Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - one of my favorite games ever.  Im a complete sucker for stealth games and this game was polished to smithereens with it's incredible level design, sick graphics, and awesome stealth gameplay.

6.)Super Smash Brothers: Melee - Basically one-upped the original SSMB completely.  This was the reason to buy the gamecube.  Nothing else mattered.

7.) Star Fox 64 - Probably my favorite game on the N64.  I just loved the secret pathways for the missions, and the star fox universe is probably one of the best worlds created by nintendo.  It's a shame that none of the newer star fox games can live up to the 64 version.  Hell, I played through Adventures and Assault, even though they were both pretty shitty.  That's when you know you have a good game - when it dedicates you to the franchise despite if the newer games suck.

8.)  Half Life 2 - incredible graphics for its time, possibly the greatest sequel in video game history.  Puzzle solving and an awesome storyline makes this game one for the ages.

9.) Mass Effect 2 - the first Mass Effect was one of the first RPGs that had an indepth dialogue system.  ME2 took the awesome story-telling from the first, polished the gameplay, to make one of the most highest rated games to grace our generation.  The universe is comparable to Star Wars, and that's saying something

10.).World of Warcraft - I just have to put in here because it's the MMO that revolutionized the world.  Everyone knows about it, everyone's played it at least once.  It's the mmo.

Honorable Mentions:

Pokemon Red/Blue - started the US pokemon craziness. Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur has a place in my heart.

Fire Emblem 7 - the first US FE to be released, the strategy and characters were amazing.  The game was suprisingly deep for a GBA game. yay Lyn!

Left 4 Dead - Back a couple years ago when zombies were still slightly rare in the media, Valve pumped out one of the greatest zombie games ever.  I always wanted a really good zombie game, and in 2008 Valve delivered.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - it's like Cod 4 on steroids!

Age of Empires 2 - my favorite and first RTS!  There's not much to say..

Re: Top 10 favorite video games

I don't have any specific order for these, except for the first one. Asking me to narrow it down to ten is near impossible, and I know that I've missed out on some obvious choices.

1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - My all time favorite video game, and the one that I'd use as my answer for those "if you were stuck on an island..." questions. The Tanooki Suit, Frog Suit, and of course, the legendary KURIBO'S SHOE. I actually learned many years later that a few more levels with the shoe were going to be put into the game, but were taken out last minute, as well as some other interesting ideas that I think Nintendo should have decided to pull the trigger on in the end.

2. Tomba! (PS1) - One of the most underrated RPG's of all time, I STILL cannot fill every page of the sidequests you have to do in this game. If you love sidequests that don't bore the living shit out of you like some other games do (*coughcoughBLITZBALLcoughcough*) then you should really get this game. But good luck finding a hard copy, because it's become one of the harder to find games for the original Playstation. I own two copies, both used and in piss-poor shape thanks to Blockbuster somehow getting used games from people who must have buried them in their yard, or something.

3. Pokemon Crystal (GBC) - Blue deserves an honorable mention for getting me into the games, but to me Crystal took everything that made Gold and Silver great, and added a few other elements that made it perfection. A shame that without cheating devices, you couldn't get Celebi in the North American version. This to me was the last Pokemon game that I truly enjoyed, not counting the Fire Red/Leaf Green and Soul Silver/Heart Gold remakes.

4. The Legend of Zelda (NES) - Honestly, A Link to the Past, Majora's Mask (Glad I'm not the only one who liked Majora's Mask over Ocarina of Time,) and Link's Awakening deserve honorable mentions as well, and it was hard to pick one. However, I had to go with the original, truly a game that anyone can pick up and STILL enjoy as much as people did over 24 years ago. Honorable mention goes to the sequel, which isn't bad itself, despite its flaws. Plus, I AM ERROR.

5. Mega Man X (SNES) - I love the original Mega Man series over the X series, but I love the first X game more than any other Mega Man game in some ways. Probably because it was one of the first Mega Man games I ever played, along with Mega Man's 1 and 2. Now-a-days, I appreciate the original series more than I do the X series (Mega Man's 2 and 3 are some of the best games you'll ever play,) but this one will standout as a fond memory from my childhood.

6. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES) - Another early childhood memory, this game was a masterpiece. Simply a masterpiece. Square was on FIRE at this time, with the Final Fantasy series hitting its peak (So sue me, I even liked Mystic Quest) and this game is one that I enjoy even over the FF series. Mario games make for great RPG's. In 1995, who'd of thunk it, huh? And I love the FF references with the villian Culex! Of course, now that I know what I'm doing, he's one of the easiest bosses in the entire game. But when I was like 7 or 8, he was a monster.

7. Paper Mario (n64) - So of course, I have to add this one as well. The sequel was fun in its own ways, but you can't beat the original. I still play this one all the way through once in a while. Goombario was the man.

8. Gradius III (SNES) - I love the Gradius/Life Force series, and I almost put Life Force in over this one, but I can't help but pick this as my favorite of the series. Fun and addictive, and gets insanely difficult at some points, but it's so fun that you can't help but keep playing for hours... and hours...

9. Alleyway (GB) - I'm a sucker for the Breakout style of games, what can I say? Add Mario characters and you've got a happy camper. This is/was perfect for long and boring car rides.

10. Crash Bandicoot: Warped (PS1) - This is another one that stems mostly from childhood memories. The first two games were good, but this one to me sealed the deal on how awesome this series was originally. After this game the series as a whole took a huge nosedive, though I liked the one Crash game that was released early in the life of the PS2.

Honorable mentions: Tetris, Donkey Kong Country (any game from the series, though 64 especially,) Super Mario Bros. 2 (the REAL sequel, not the one with Doki Doki Panic! characters taken out and Mario chracters put in. I love that version (Super Mario USA as it's called in Japan) but you can't beat the original Japanese sequel, which is insanely hard in some spots,) Final Fantasy IV (The only FF game that I truly love,) Blaster Master, WWF Raw, Ninja Gaiden series, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, and many others.

And I have to mention Dragon Power, not because it's any good, but for being the most hilarious video game of all time. "HOW DO WE SEARCH" USE THIS *long pause* DRAGON RADAR"

Hmmm... I don't play that many, but...

1:Pokemon HeartGold
I adore this game for many, many, many reasons. I have always been a Pokemon lover, and this is an extra-shiny version of my very favourite of the games. Two worlds, sixteen gyms, kickass storyline, Ho-oh, Team Rocket, and now, nostalgia out the wazoo. Love it.

2:Pokemon Gold
Second Pokemon game I ever owned, after Yellow. Adored it first time around. I remember the pure joy of finding out that I got to go back to Kanto, having initially thought "geez, everyone's weaker in this game..." First game I completed the Pokedex in, also. 251. Ya beauty.

3: Tetris
Retro as hell, very simple yet the most addictive thing i've ever encountered, even more than Farmville. How can watching a tiny pixellated rocket ship blast off fill you with such accomplisment? And will that tune EVER leave my head?

4: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
I had never actually played a Zelda game before this, though I knew the general storyline, so the gameplay and puzzles wer very new to me- and I adored them. It remains one of the most graphically beautiful games i've seen to date. It was brilliant fun getting to be a wolf. Also, as a human, Link was pretty hot ;)

5: Paper Mario 2: The Thousand-Year Door
This. Game. Is. Gold. The comedic dialogue, the funky characters, the cute art style, the ninja stages as Peach or the classic SMASH EVERYTHING Bowser stages... SO MUCH LOVE. This entire series is comedy gold, but this is my favourite installment. The sweet side of the storyline was utterly adorable. Plus, Count Bleck had the dress sense of Kaitou Kid, which is never a bad thing ;D

6:Mario Kart (any installment)
I am also addicted to this. From playing Super Mario Kart against my cousins as a wean to practicing cornering for hours on Moomoo farm when I got my own N64 to playing around the globe on Mario Kart Wii today... it's always been mental fun, and one of the only things to draw more swearies from me than Glen Beck (wanker).

7: Professor Layton series
I love doing the puzzles in these, though Luke's accent drives me insane. The professor's Top Hat Of Awesome makes up for it ;D Still, the storylines always come with a dash of WTF... but the cutscenes are always beautiful. *goes back to watch swordfighting sequence again*

8: Rogue Squadron
I'm not really much of an FPS fan, but as a thorough Star Wars geek I can't resist the lure of getting to make The Trench Run myself. The Trench Run. Or fighting The Battle Of Endor. Okay, i'll stop geekily fangirling now.

9: Pokemon Yellow
I probably shouldn't put Pokemon down again, but this was the first ever video game that I ever personally owned and it has a special little place in my heart for that. Also, it and the yellow Gameboy Colour my grandparents gave me are both made out of adamantium. They have been dropped on concrete, on wood, on carpet, on tarmac, in puddles and downstairs; they have gone through the washing machine in a pocket on at least three occasions; they have been stepped on repeatedly, run over by bicycles six times, skateboards five, and a car one. There is no physical damage save a small nick on the edge of the Gameboy casing, and the software still works perfectly. My Pikachu still pwns all and my Pokedex is still full. The software is awesome and the hardware is indestructible.

10: The Sims 2
Currently i'm not playing it, mainly because exam time is coming up and if I start playing it I DO NOT STOP. My sims' lives become more important than my own. I start thinking like a sim- if i'm hungry I announce that my hunger need is low, if my brother's in the bathroom too long I scream at him to get out before my bladder need bottoms out. I also can't stop making manga characters on it and getting them all to make out. :P

Those are my top ten, pretty much of all time. Honorable mentions also to Wario Ware, Banjo-Kazooie, Pokemon Blue, FireRed and Crystal, Trace Memories, Advance Wars, Battle For Naboo, Wii Sports, various Mario games, Mario Party, and Super Smash Brothers, my personal favourite "SPAM ATTACKS" game.

probably because most of them are mediocre and overrated that are exactly the same as 100s of other mediocre shooter released in the last 5 years

so pratically every shooter except RE4, Dead Space, Modern Warfare 1, Metroid Prime 3 and Valve games
