Anyone else misses the old soundtrack?
Anyone remembers the extremely cool pieces of music used back in the day (episodes until around 300)? There were so many mysterious melodies and right now the soundtrack is lacking somehow. Only a few of the old pieces received a remastered version. I wish all of them would get remastered and played again in the series.

Re: Anyone else misses the old soundtrack?
But most of it was remastered?
Like I had the remastered soundtrack, and there's definitely more than a few songs on it. And it still missed quite a number of the remastered songs I've heard in the later episodes. I can assure you of this, as someone who has paid VERY close attention to what bgm is used in the series.
Now, whether they use it enough, is another issue entirely. I swear, there's a couple of songs from that actual soundtrack I didn't hear in the actual anime until...literally the past 2 years. And it's from 2007!

Re: Anyone else misses the old soundtrack?
I've seen you mention the number of songs after each review. However, even if most of them were remastered, it's still not all of them, and the ones not to be remastered or even played again after ep. 300 and that was NOT in 2007, but in 2002, were my favorites. Even some of the remasters were not as good as the original versions. Do you happen to know the names of the songs? I don't. My favorite theme is the one that was frequently played back in the day, until ep. 100-something. It was a creepy and mysterious tune, but I can't name the instruments... I think cymbals were used as one of them? Do you know which one I mean? It played often during the investigation part of the case.

I mean, if you really want to look for it, they're basically all either in the very original soundtrack they released or in the first few movie soundtracks...

Re: Anyone else misses the old soundtrack?
Do you mean the old songs in general? Those were still in use until Episode 459. Or do you specifically refer to the era of the first sound director who left with Episode 295? In the face of different preferences, his successors didn’t replace the material. Quite the contrary: When the first four albums of the series and the first five albums of the movies had been established, they virtually stopped introducing new tunes. Those from The Phantom of Baker Street and Magician of the Silver Sky were rarely utilized, while those from Crossroad in the Ancient Capital, Strategy Above the Depths and The Private Eyes’ Requiem—apart from very few exceptions—were basically ignored. Instead, they gradually went back to the early tracks and fished out some that hadn’t been played in ages. Over two hundred pieces created between 2002 and 2006 were downright neglected—such a waste of quality.Adel34 wrote:Anyone remembers the extremely cool pieces of music used back in the day (episodes until around 300)?
That depends on the perspective: If you simply divide it into 1996–2007 and 2007–today, a mere third has gotten the treatment. That’s a deceptive quota, however, since, due to the above-mentioned agenda, Crossroad in the Ancient Capital and Magician of the Silver Sky had barely anything to contribute, and The Phantom of Baker Street, Strategy Above the Depths and The Private Eyes’ Requiem were discontinued entirely. Stuff from the films until Countdown to Heaven, on the other hand, was updated for the most part, provided it had proven appropriate enough. (That’s the problem with Mystery of the Culprit: Despite being a fan favorite, it disappeared along with the first sound director and, as a result, has no ’07 remake, which is a shame.) Most importantly, though, around two thirds of the television’s Original Soundtracks were not only refreshed, but occasionally also extended with new, alternative versions: one year ago, for example, Episode 845 introduced yet another alteration of Theme of Devil ’07 that had been in the drawer for a decade. Practically everything that mattered before has been covered.Adel34 wrote:Only a few of the old pieces received a remastered version.
By the way, I’m surprised that you raise this topic now that the sound directors who have been in charge since Episode 790 deploy the ’07 compositions in a much broader way than it was done previously. Here are three instances:
- Several forgotten souls that had been in prison forever have been let out on parole: Everyone’s Fun Mushroom Hunting ’07 [Episode 876 (October 7, 2017) ← Episode 472 (May 14, 2007)], Investigation Legwork ’07 [Episode 874 (September 23, 2017) ← Episode 473 (May 21, 2007)] and The Investigation Begins ’07 [Episode 791 (September 12, 2015) ← Episode 485 (August 27, 2007)] have returned after eight or ten years in the basement, and they’re not alone.
- Conan’s Rock & Roll ’07 [Episode 884 (December 9, 2017)], Escape from the Cave ’07 [Episode 824 (July 9, 2016)] and Let’s Go, Conan (Super Fast) ’07 [Episode 791 (September 12, 2015)] made their debuts and have been included half as often as, almost as often as or more often than their predecessors between 1996 and 2007—in less than a hundred installments.
- Even patterns have been reconstructed: Conan’s Victory ’07 [Episode 876 (October 7, 2017) ← Episode 511 (August 4, 2008)], Let’s Go, Conan (Super Fast) ’07 [Episode 791 (September 12, 2015)] as well as Ran’s Theme ’07 [Episode 784 (July 11, 2015) ← Episode 621 (June 25, 2011)] and sisters again dominate the epilog following the ending theme—like in “the good old times”.

Re: Anyone else misses the old soundtrack?
Valentin, you seem to be very familiar with the subject. I mean the Original Soundtrack, and to be even more specific (now that I checked), the first three CDs from 1996. I know that much, because all my favorite songs were from introduced in the first 100 episodes and were used more often than not. I didn't know about the first music director, but thanks for the info, that's useful to know. I guess that's why I said that they stopped playing "around ep. 300". The song I was talking about (plus two other songs that I really like) did not receive any sort of remaster and like you said "disappeared with the first sound director". Would you be able to tell the titles of these songs if I gave you episode numbers or titles from 1996?

Re: Anyone else misses the old soundtrack?
I do really dislike the fact that they changed the soundtracks used in the remastered episodes. One of my favourite individual scenes of all time was the part in episode 425 where Conan goes to the park where Kondo is going to be murdered and "Tsugi no Target" plays. It's no longer there in the remastered version... shame.

@Adel34 :
If you have the episode number, just use the DC Wiki. Most of the old episodes have a complete BGM listing, an example with episode 1 :

As Wakarimashita wrote, though, the Detective Conan Wiki is a good source for the old material, and the titles you prefer are probably there. Nevertheless, I’d be curious to learn what your favorites are; feel free to name those tracks that you consider “extremely cool”. (Should you not discover them, I’ll help you, of course.)
I agree that certain elements feel strange with altered music, specially if you’ve known the original versions for so long.Andarer wrote:I do really dislike the fact that they changed the soundtracks used in the remastered episodes. An instance from the remastered Black Impact that I find alienating is the scene where Haibara urges Kogorou and Ran to stay at Professor Agasa’s house. Need not to know., still including the electric guitar, is replaced by movie fifteen’s Main Theme ~ Ballad, the one created for the silly moment where Conan is buried by an avalanche and viewers are apparently supposed to believe that he’s dead. While purely subjective, it’s too odd to fit together after so many years—at least now.
But there are improvements as well. While the final showdown between Gin and Shuuichi Akai used to be accompanied by Time-Bombed Skyscraper (for the third time in the same episode …), the remake gives variety to it thanks to Counter Board. However ludicrous The Eleventh Striker may be, that tune is definitely more appropriate in that context.
I guess it’s similar to the ’07 update in general: Some are better, some are worse.

I found out that the favorite song I've been talking about is "Shinichi's Great Deduction". I really love this piece and it's unfortunate that it vanished with the first sound director, like you said, since I never heard this song from ep. 300 onwards. It did not receive a remaster.Valentin wrote:Sure. As Wakarimashita wrote, though, the Detective Conan Wiki is a good source for the old material, and the titles you prefer are probably there. The second one is called "Mystery of the Case", it didn't play as often as the previous one, but it's amazing regardless. And again, no remaster. I think this one stopped playing after ep. 100.
Both of these songs were heard in episodes 39-40 (Wealthy Daughter Case).
If either one of them got a "clever" remaster (in a sense that it's hard to tell whether it's a remaster or a brand new song), please tell me.
The third one is called "The Culprit's Hideout". And yes, I know what you're thinking - this song received countless remasters. But they're all slow versions of the original. There was even a fast version, but the regular version hasn't been heard since about episode 100 as well.

The version of "The Culprit's Hideout" you're talking about was indeed not remastered in the 2007 soundtrack. You have the list of the remixed songs and as you can see only the (Creeping version) was remastered.

Re: Anyone else misses the old soundtrack?
Shinichi’s Great Deduction undoubtedly deserves to be called “old soundtrack” as, indeed, the song practically disappeared with the first sound director. Not completely, though—after Episode 295, there were another four inclusions, and the last hurrah was as late as in Episode 443 from 2006.Adel34 wrote:I found out that the favorite song I've been talking about is "Shinichi's Great Deduction". It’s not just “as often”, it’s almost zero—a mere nine playings isn’t exactly the high score. Ironically, the scene that I associate with Mystery of the Case is the confession from Episode 339, which is its farewell performance.Adel34 wrote:The second one is called "Mystery of the Case", it didn't play as often as the previous one, but it's amazing regardless. I’m afraid it’s safe to assume that both tracks are dead. A remake definitely hasn’t surfaced thus far, and I can’t imagine that it has been left untouched for so long.Adel34 wrote:If either one of them got a "clever" remaster (in a sense that it's hard to tell whether it's a remaster or a brand new song), please tell me.
The Culprit’s Hideout was actually pretty stable throughout. It showed up a few times each year, with 2002 having been almost as active as 1996, and, in fact, was overall more frequent than the More and More ver. Yet, it was the latter that received the ’07 treatment—yes, The Culprit’s Hideout (More and More) ’07 does exist! You can hear it best in Episode 488, but also in Episode 857, which brought it back for a short cameo. It’s the standard version that got cut, not the fast one.Adel34 wrote:The third one is called "The Culprit's Hideout". And yes, I know what you're thinking - this song received countless remasters. Let’s not forget that the album is only a selection. While sixty-three compositions have been issued on that CD, there are over a hundred fifty revisions altogether.Wakarimashita wrote:The version of "The Culprit's Hideout" you're talking about was indeed not remastered in the 2007 soundtrack. I recommend everyone who is curious about the rest to watch these videos that present them in chronological order with the most extensive samples available (free registration required), specially the first nine compilations since those cover the ’07 updates. I’m sure many will be baffled how much has been retained and be like “Wow, it’s basically all there!” because a lot of pieces diminished so quickly that they might have fallen into oblivion or been there all along.
What’s interesting in that regard as well is numbers eleven to thirteen, which contain more than forty new works that were introduced in 2009 and 2010. Had those been released, there would have been an Original Soundtrack 5. I don’t understand why they’ve decided against putting them out; I think that several tunes are in no way inferior to their predecessors. How is the reception there, anyway? Do average fans even know them?

The only thing we can do is hope for new good OSTs. Wonder when the composers gonna change because... Well let's leave it at that for now.

Re: Anyone else misses the old soundtrack?
To be fair, the OST will never be as bad as it was in 2009/first half of 2010. They literally updated some of the newest (at the time) tracks and it's obvious why when you listen to some of them around that time. In retrospect, they might as well have been unfinished. That and the problem of a lot of the later movie soundtracks having way too many tracks to create anything worthwhile. And whatever you think of it nowadays, it was notably worse at that time TO THE POINT that it's the entire reason I started paying attention to when they would use the 2007 one.
tl;dr version of this issue: OST in the first 10 or so years >= 2007 OST > current OST > early 2010 OST

Oh, that's surprising. I thought it was more than that. I associate it with episode 40 the most.
