I hardly believe Gosho will ever explain this, and I don't even think this element needs to be explained. It always presented itself as a "sixth sense" kind of thing, and due to its inconsistent and convenient usage, it's quite clear that it will only "trigger" itself whenever the author wants it to be triggered in order to give hints or mislead the reader. It's a convenient device for Gosho and any attempt of explanation he may give will probably be contrived or verge towards lite sci-fi. It's sort of like trying to explain Kid's disguising abilities or mimicking someone's voice - they can't really be explained.

I see your point, although I wouldn't necessarily compare it with Kid's disguising stunts. That one is just one of DC's cartoonish gimmicks, like how Conan's use of the tranquilising watch never fails or hurts Kogoro, or Makoto's strength etc.
At least Haibara's plot device ability has been touched upon more than once(after different scenarios occur) that warrants further answers. It can go either way at the end. If we are lucky, someone might get an answer from Gosho if this question is asked.

I was going to post this in the chaps thread, but it's more about Rumi, so...

I'm surprised about the suspicions of Rumi having only one eye...
My first option is that she could be faking it on purpose, like for what ever reason, she wants Kuroda to believe she has only one eye, so she is acting.

But she could be really have one fake eye. In the chapters she has appeared so far, there was only one time when she looks at something with only her right eye, when falling on the golf player:


And whenever there's a special drawing effect on her eyes, either the right does not have it


or the right lense of the glasses is drawn completely white.




So maybe she has indeed a fake eye and was angry at the guy because she knowns what it means to lose an eye? I don't know.
Also, having a fake eye doesn't mean she is Rum. So... no idea! Maybe Rum is a group of people and she is the one with the characteristic of the fake eye. Or maybe Rum will appear in f1000 out of nowhere with his own fake eye

Hmmm.... But isn't it difficult to draw with one eye??? When conan and co visited rumi's place, isn't Rumi the one who draw those tiger thing?

So , I went ahead and with my poor editing skills i tried to make out a way for wakita's eye. if he hasn't closed his other eye with a bandage then?
Also, i removed his bucked teeths just in case they were a part of his disguise.

My father draws comics and he is blind in one eye since birth. He hits people sometimes walking in the street and doesn´t calculate properly distances but in overall he sees quite well.

after look at 988 spoiler pic, Rumi's right eye is likely blind but it's like she had that only recently, coz she still not used to that.

Hmm... Well after all we still don't know if RUM had faked eye recently or for long time and there is a theory about RUM's eye that RUM had damaged his/her eye in kohji case 17 years ago. If it's true then it will support my opinion about Rumi is not RUM.

Other Theory, Rumi is Kohji her/himself, thats why the reaction on the eye. Rum just injured him and Kohji faked his death. After that, he began a new life as Rumi Wakasa to lure out Rum with that name.

In Conan, things like that can repeat and the age also wouldnt be a problem, if Kohji didnt died when taking the APTX, but was just rejuvenated for maybe 10 years.
