But wasn't the victim dead by then? I thought the hose-swinging happened after the victim's death?

The timeline is like this, right?

1. Yumi and Naeko spot the culprit swinging the hose.
2. Yumi chases him down the street where he throws the hose at her.
3. Culprit is cornered into the ramen shop.
4. Miwako and Sato find the dead body sometime later.

So the victim could not have been killed after the hose-swinging right?
Spoiler:
We don't know. The victim's body was lying just in front of where the culprit was twirling the hose, so the hose either killed her, or it was used for something like disposing evidence, or concealing something that would expose the culprit.

If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outre results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.”

Spoiler:
Perhaps the trick with the hose lies in the fact that the suspect took it with them while running from Yumi?

I mean, he could have just dropped it there and tried to make a getaway when she started after him. And then, in the middle of the chase, he gets rid of it for some reason. I think if we can solve why he took the hose with him, we might be nearer to solving the trick.

Probably to remove what ever was taped to the end of the hose?

Yes, perhaps. So does that suggest the thing that was taped was bulky/tightly wrapped around? If it were something small, he could have just ripped it off, I guess.

another thing I'm a bit confused about is why the hose is so short. It is listed in the manga as 2 meters long (since I'm american, I had to convert that and its about 6.5 feet). Most garden hoses that you can buy, at least in america come in sizes like 25 feet (7.6m) or 50 feet (15.2m), so why would you cut it that short if you had planed to use it as a lasso? Are hoses that short available in other countries? I honestly don't know.

Exactly, I first thought the hose actually had a hook or something attached to it which was used to climb into the victim's house. But would a 6 foot long hose actually reach a window? Even if it did, would it support a person's weight? It still doesn't explan why it was being swung around.

I actually went and measured a spare hose at my place, and it's close to 7.5 feet. So I guess they are available.

There was a broken window of some kind, but Yumi doesn't say whether its on the ground floor or the second floor. I guess we need to wait for a better image of the house.

Just a slight suspicion I had, remember the guest-book way back in the blush mermaid case?Besides names of Shiho, Gin and Vodka, it had another name, it went something like Ogura/Daikoku Rentarou.I wasn't suspicious at first, thinking that Gosho must have just run short of names and thus it was just a random name, but maybe his return means he is indeed the guy from the guest book(which some people expected to be the boss, but seeing as this is the RUM Ark, maybe he is RUM?)Katsumasa seems a feminine-ish name to me, he may have a fake eye, seems well built and is a quite old, just a theory and a very very uncertain one

The name in the book is Ooguro/Daikoku , not Ogura

I feel like it has far more to do with the whole yumi-shuukichi-masumi thing than the actual ramen shop owner and part-timer.

The location is just a convenient back drop. The ramen cook and the part-timer both already know Conan and know that he contributed to the solution of the previous case (and they even mention that) which means they will probably let him search about freely, unlike last time where they tried to stop him from entering an active crime scene.

In the previous ramen case, the Ramen shop was located in Haiddo for nearly 20 years, but at the end of the case it was torn down and moved to Beika which is even closer to where the main characters live (not that Haiddo was that far away in the first place). According to Ogura, Yumi and Shuukichi used to come to the restaurant while they were dating when it was at the old location. Now at its new location Masumi claims that she is a regular customer and Ogura is there to confirm that Masumi takes home extra portions (presumably for the Mystery Girl).

Wow, that's interesting.

Also, it's not clear which end of the hose the tape was stuck, was it? I mean was it the end which was being swung or the other end?

Spoiler:
Since Yumi and Naeko describe the culprit as a he, the two males would come under suspicion more than the one female suspect... but she's also a hostess. The other two suspects don't seem to be carrying anything.

These pictures could be subtle hints that the female suspect is the culprit, but we still need more info.

Spoiler:
There was just so little textual, factual information given about things that could make the mystery clearer. We haven't seen the victim's house, and the suspects haven't been questioned by Shinichi/Conan and Masumi.
