In 401 Conan says as much ("believe me, I'm not about to get Ran involved with the men in black").

Yeah, but in all honesty, say Gin and Vodka stumble onto his secret, but Ran is still in the dark.Silverbullet96 wrote:Idk if she could handle something that dangerous, mentally or physically. Is he honestly expecting them to have a code of honor that prevents them from killing her or anyone close to him? Seems to me they would just as likely off Ran and Kogoro on the basis that Conan is around them frequently, even if they remain ignorant.
I mean in the original comics, Gwen Stacy never found out that her boyfriend was Spider-Man, but the Green Goblin still deemed her fair game for death.
So even keeping the girlfriend out of the club house can bite the hero in the arse.

Arguably one of the best attempts at tackling the story of "Ran discovering the secret behind Conan". It's strong point is taking a common plot for Detective Conan fan fics and presenting it in a fresh manner such as:
- Touching on things that aren't dealt with in the show or discussed much.
- While there is some understanding towards Conan's predicament, the fic doesn't ignore the problematic approach he takes towards keeping quiet.
So, do yourself a favor and read this. I only wish I could so something half as decent.

As for being defeated, that was mainly the Movies I think? And that was against a strong adult man that was like twice her physical features (considering he (Irish) trains especially for killing, while Ran trains for tournaments and doesn't plan to break peoples necks with her karate)
There would also be Makoto who's better than her, but he's also a martial arts madman XD And he's also bigger than Ran I think.
And otherwise, Ran is also physically fit and has good reflexes. She saved Sonoko out of a car that was rolling down a cliff for example. She also saved Haibara from the sniping and showed that she can be really fast.
Mentally, she only cries because she misses Shinichi. She probably also worries about him, since all Shinichi tells her is that he's on "a difficult case".
She never cried when she was abducted or threatened or her friend were abducted or threatened, but instead, reacted with a clear mind. Like the Sonoko and Haibara saving: how many people would actually be able to instantly react and go save people? Most people would actually be under shock and be stunned or frozen in place. Most would even panic. But Ran never panics.
The only time she panics is when ghosts are involved, but that's a phobia.

Kleene Onigiri: And as I also brought up, can we really be sure that Gin and Vodka would only murder those in the know? I mean even if I'm sure they'd avoid unnecessary attention, I question whether they wouldn't still go for the two people living with Conan.
I mean early on, you might justify that Kogoro was the best lead on the Organization, but he has allies that are just as capable, and are also in the know themselves, so living with Ran and Kogoro whether they are ignorant or not is putting them at risk.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
Several people talked about Ran deferring to Shinichi's opinion or moral stance on an issue, but I think they've missed the point. Pretty much all of the main/supporting characters defer to Shinichi's opinions, moral stances, and commands at some point. I think that what Goushou is trying to get across is that Shinichi is a natural leader with the charisma to get people to adopt his perspectives, and to make them follow his commands. That doesn't mean that he's actually right, but that he can get people to follow him. Ran isn't particularly special in this regard.
My DC Fanfic: Awaking and Arising - Shiromi writes her version of the end of the series. With 100% more lesbians and immortal zombie boys. And existential crises. Lots of them.
Kogorou - A character study that seeks to answer the question: Why is Kogorou the way he is?
A Kindred Spirit - Sonoko and Makoto realize that they have more in common than previously realized.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
@Antiyonder: Indeed, the BO would kill all the people around Conan/Shinichi, according to Haibara. Whether they know about his secret or not. So that also means that not only Kogoro and Ran would be in danger, since Conan is living with them, but also the DBs, Agasa, Heiji, Kazuha and so on.
So him keeping his identity a secret from Ran is not really justified by him saying "he wants to keep her/them save from harm". (a lot of people already say that too XD)
At the beginning he maybe also wanted to keep Ran save from worrying? But she's actually worrying and crying because of that. And Conan saw that. So also not a reason anymore to keep his identity a secret from Ran.
THEN you might say he wanted to keep it a secret from Ran, in case something happens and Shinichi dies or has to flee, Ran can go for someone else instead and forget about Shinichi. BUUUUT we know how that worked out now... Ran waits forever and Shinichi also doesn't want to give up on Ran :x
So there is really NO REASON (anymore) to keep his identity a secret anymore (besides not to get killed by Ran, since Ran confessed in front of Conan and he also saw her naked a lot XD)
@Shiromi: I agree. There are a lot of "flaws" said about Ran which also apply to a lot of other DC characters.

Or, perhaps, they happen to share them. I definitely wouldn't say his presence has nothing to do with influencing opinions/views, but it's not all because of him.Shiromi wrote:Several people talked about Ran deferring to Shinichi's opinion or moral stance on an issue, but I think they've missed the point. But, yeah, Ran isn't the only one influenced by Shinichi—Heiji and Shiho/Ai are two other examples.
It's worth noting that Ran realized her love for Shinichi during his speech to the disguised Vermouth about how saving someone didn't require logic—this belief of Shinichi's, thus, is something that Ran finds incredibly attractive/endearing, so maybe its one she already had, and was even looking for in the person she wanted to be with.
“Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent. We would not dare to conceive the things which are really mere commonplaces of existence. If we could fly out of that window hand in hand, hover over this great city, gently remove the roofs, and and peep in at the queer things which are going on, the strange coincidences, the plannings, the cross-purposes, the wonderful chains of events, working through generations, and leading to the most outre results, it would make all fiction with its conventionalities and foreseen conclusions most stale and unprofitable.”

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
Earlier in the series I think that was at least somewhat true, it's just that bad writing kinda killed those defenses imo.
I do agree that Shinichi's influence on characters is not exclusive to Ran, she's just the most obvious (and overdone) example of it. But that's more a flaw of most popular shonen more than anything (see: Naruto).

You're acting like a fangirl. Conan won't reveal his identity to Ran because it is heavily expected that she may blow the cover pretty easily.Kleene Onigiri wrote:@Antiyonder: Indeed, the BO would kill all the people around Conan/Shinichi, according to Haibara. Also, you'll have to forgive me, but based on a bunch of your posts in the past, you probably shouldn't be the one to accuse people of acting like fanboys/fangirls.
As far as your argument goes, nope, I don't think it's heavily expected or true. Ran can't learn of Conan's secret simply because the status quo has to remain and the series needs to continue. Some things in this series simply don't have in-story reasons.

Re: Why do people dislike Ran?
But my comment was not off topic, in the newest special (Disappearance of Conan...) she contrubuted literaly nothing to the plot. Through the entire 90 minutes of the movie she was angry that she was unable to call Shinichi. I think this is a valid reason why people hate her.
