Perhaps 2016, 20th anniversary of the anime, will bring us something a bit more exciting :V

Re: New Anime Special Announced: The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa
After flipping through Kagi Dorobo no Method, there are quite a few differences I noticed between the movie and the Conan trailer. In the movie the memory-less guy and the guy who stole his identity are separated for nearly half of the movie learning about each other's lives. In the Conan special we see the two of them looking like they abduct the memory-less Conan together from the bathhouse. Those would happen toward the beginning of the movie and drastically alter how it would end. In the original movie there is a woman who really wants to get married and follows the memory-less guy around. Since the main two men have abducted the memory-less Conan and Conan is not marrying age this is unlikely to happen in the special. Plus Ran and Haibara being at the bathhouse when Conan slips and falls would also be different.Nemomon wrote:Now we can question if there's anything original in this special...
Based on the ending of the original movie, Id say that this special will end with Conan teaching his own method of deduction and how his mind works to the two men that abduct him and somehow help them through a major problem that runs the full length of the special starting with the guy with the tatto shown in the trailer. However they probably will have completely different outcomes and endings because the trailer shows a bunch of things that don't line up with the movie at all. I just posted the pictures of the bath scene above for comparison purposes. Apparently Gosho really did like this movie and I would recommend that some of you watch it.
I hope that I can find someway to contribute to the community even if it's just random crack theories and looking things up for people who can't find the information they need.

Yeah, They (I hope) would not just animate the whole movie and add Conan there, but still... they took some part from this movie, some part from another, probably something else from yet another...jimmy_kud0_tv2 wrote:After flipping through Kagi Dorobo no Method, there are quite a few differences I noticed between the movie and the Conan trailer. And we have a hodgepodge.
My dad’s a soldier blue I’ll be a soldier, too
When I grow older you will see me rescue you
I’ll teach you this old song so you can sing along
When I am dead and gone the day won’t be so long.

Re: New Anime Special Announced: The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa
From what I can tell they only took bits and pieces from just that one movie, but I don't understand why everyone seems disappointed. Many Conan episodes that are cannon are heavily themed, heavily based on, or follow the plot lines of stories written by other mystery writers just with Conan and Kogoro as insert characters for the actual characters, why is this any different? Its just that this special is based on a comedic, exaggerated Yakuza movie involving amnesia.
Most likely the plots will have to be different enough to actually get people to watch it, so they can actually justify making it so you never know. I still have pretty high hopes for the special.

Yeah I think people should get this through their heads already. Gosho's priority for this series has rarely been the characters. It has ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS been about making fun mystery stories, first. Or look at Kindaichi, which is an even better example of that. Because if you want to tell me Kindaichi's quality comes from its unique and 3 dimensional main characters, you better start on your standup already, because THAT's hilarious.jimmy_kud0_tv2 wrote:Many Conan episodes that are cannon are heavily themed, heavily based on, or follow the plot lines of stories written by other mystery writers just with Conan and Kogoro as insert characters for the actual characters, why is this any different? Re: New Anime Special Announced: The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa
The issue here is simply that this was billed as a commemoration of the Detective Conan 20th anniversary. It is a return of the big specials of yore, so naturally everyone expected something big and exciting--something very Conan-like, at the very least. No one expected or wanted something like this, such why the news has landed very flat. That doesn't mean it won't or can't be good. It just means that Shogakukan and Gosho completely misplayed their hand on this and undoubtedly should have promoted this from the get-go as a "re-imagined" collaboration of an existing property.

I'm really surprised you of all people agreed with that. There's a bit of a difference between "stories written by other mystery writers" and a special "based on a comedic, exaggerated Yakuza movie involving amnesia." That doesn't preclude this from being good, but pretending that these two things are equally relatable to Detective Conan and its legacy is a definite stretch (especially in a 20th anniversary commemorative special).kkslider5552000 wrote:Yeah I think people should get this through their heads already. Re: New Anime Special Announced: The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa
Well my point was more agreeing with that point and less with its relevance with this in particular.
Though to be honest, I think that's pretty cool an idea for a Conan story and I hate when the series feels the need to stay too close to its own expected stories when we're going to get plenty of 3 suspect 2 part murder mysteries where they killed for a sad reason anyway. That's why I loved Magic Kaitou being animated, it was such a lovely change of pace.
I'm not excited about this but more because I don't get excited for non-canon material, even if I expect it to be good.

Hmm I don't know about you guys but this premise has me excited. I mean sure "amnesia" has been a plot point in two other serials but the first one was Ran in movie 4 and the second one was a fake-out with the Shinichi look a like. What's got me excited is that this is obviously going to be pushed as a legit loss of memory thing for Conan of all people... the kind of scenario you only find in fanfics. I mean think about it! We'll see a unique interpretation of Shinichi without his Conan mask. And just like with the Shirigami case there will be that disconnect between his identities but this time real. That coupled with what looks like a very involved threat makes this look promising.
I also think it's worth noting that the director is a huge draw, no matter how he's translating his other work into this it all comes down to the fact that he's a very celebrated figure in his industry. He's good at what he does and he obviously loves the series. I can't deny his work based on that.

I'm kinda psyched for this. Granted there's a good chance that something in the story will let me down (but when does that not happen for me?). That's to be expected, but I have a feeling that I'll enjoy this a lot.

Mai Kuraki sings the theme song.
Also, can't remember whether or not it was mentioned previously, but this special will air in December
