Re: I'm Currently Watching...

I watched the first episode of Nisekoi today. I've been caught up with manga for almost a yearish now? I don't quite remember. Anyway, with all the ads in the manga it was hard to not be curious uwu

My comments are that it is overall very pretty - a lot more than I was expecting, actually. As someone coming from the manga, it was both awesome yet detracting. The manga never really felt like the environments were anything special, yet here they're quite stylized and they pop. It's less of a complaint and more of a word of caution I suppose? The environments are definitely gorgeous, I guess I'm just saying that if you come from the manga - or vice versa, go to the manga after this season is over - it might be a bit jarring in the difference of atmosphere. This is something I'm sure I'll get used to over time, and in fact near the end of the episode I was already pretty used to it.

Also, I might just have missed this reading the manga, but the first part takes a bit too long. ...Well no, I guess the better way to say it is that while the anime definitely felt like it was being faithful to the manga, I believe that this first episode might have been a bit better off if they had skipped a bit of the search for the locket, or at least time skipped.

The search for the locket took a bit too long, and while it was all right in the manga, that was mostly due to the fact that you can read at your own pace. I guess an argument could be made that the amount of time spent on it could allow you to really feel their frustration at not being able to find it, and the scenes were well done for what they were, but I don't know.

I guess my main gripe was that it took quite a while to get to the actual main premise - Nisekoi (or False Love, I've seen it translated as). The premise is literally the end note of the episode which, in certain ways, does work, but I kept sitting and wondering where the premise was throughout a good chunk of the episode. It could also be a bias as I really REALLY enjoy the premise, but that's just my two cents.

I kind of felt like they cut some of the comedy, or at the very least what was there wasn't executed quite as well as I remember (with the exception of the "YOU'RE ONE TO TALK YOU GORILLA-*fist comes and hovers a centimeter from his face* *same expression, no flinching*-I SAID NOTHING" that killed me). It could possibly be that hearing the jokes from the manga made me less likely to respond, but I don't know, the timing felt a little off.

I really loved the opening though. I think it caught a good amount of intrigue and set the framework for the story quite well. Oh, and the MUSIC so far has been quite amazing, I must say.

Yeah, that isn't too surprising. I have to imagine making comedy work as well going from manga to anime has got to be pretty difficult at points, especially the timing. One of the reasons I've been loving TWGOK (a series I think you've maybe heard of :V) is because the timing is absolutely wonderful. Not something I'm an expert on or anything but it is interesting...

Comedic timing is a really interesting field because, on the one hand, when it comes to manga, the timing is a tad bit easier due to the aforementioned "you can read at your own pace" fact. However, anime also has music, colour, sound-effects, and voice-work to its advantage. If you can effectively use those, the jokes can become hilarious (I know for sure that I've seen scenes where I've laughed just because of the delivery of a line - it's actually also a part of the reason I'll defend dubs to the death: comedic timing and tone is often their strong suit).

The main problem is adaptation. A good example is Kill Me Baby, imo. I remember that when I read the initial 4koma-collection/manga, I quite enjoyed it. However, the anime just didn't quite have the right timing (for my needs, anyway). There's also the fact that 4koma-collections in general are hard to adapt unu;;

Michiko and Hatchin was really good, although the ending is a bit... is the moral basically that all heterosexual men are useless and flaky and overly violent and generally not to be depended on and the only relationships that will ever serve you in life as a woman are your friendships with gay men and other women? Because on recent experience I can totally buy that.

Now my best friend wants me to watch through Shaman King because it was her entire childhood. I think I may be in for the long haul. On the upside, I like Amidamaru. On the downside, is that meant to be an english accent that tiny evil black-haired Seto Kaiba kid has?! What even is that?!

LOL HOLY CRAP again the latest episode of Kill la Kill was pretty fantastic. One thing I hated though was that satsuki survives that trashing without the uniform and if ryuko survives that ending.. Lame.....

Just started watching Trinity Blood... I have a tremendous weakness for sweet and dorky characters who turn into hardcore badasses when the situation calls for it <3
