I haven't heard of Blink of the Screen jet. What is it?
And: Someone compared Darktan to Vimes! Can you imagine that?!

Re: The Discworld Thread
No complaints here. THAT BOOK IS THE BEST THING.
It's even better now that I've finally seen an adaptation of Les Mis and suddenly REALLY SUBTLE PARALLELS EVERYWHERE (Nobby=Gavroche, Vimes=super-cynical Javert, Carcer=Evil Valjean... Vimes even refers to him being not the kind of man who'd steal a loaf of bread, but would kill the baker and burn down the bakery.)
If these books get any more genius I am going to be sexually attracted to them.

Re: The Discworld Thread
Necro-ing this thread to see if anybody else has read Raising Steam yet because it has left me emotionally not okay on a lot of levels.
The non-spoilery one being that it hit me after it finished that I may never get to read a new Discworld book again. Raising Steam is still better than anything else out there, obviously, but... Sir Pterry's condition is... showing. And it hurts.
On a positive note, dwarf feminism is best feminism because it involves axes.

Re: The Discworld Thread
I may or may not have persuaded my sister to get me it as a Christmas/birthday present ^^. And yeah, I was thinking along those lines after reading Snuff. I don't want him to go.

Re: The Discworld Thread
Hee... if you like Moist von Lipwig or Commander Vimes, you're gonna like Raising Steam. I think this is Vimes' best appearance outside of his own books. Just be emotionally prepared for lots of dwarf politics. And Rhys Rhysson being awesome.

Re: The Discworld Thread
Oh my goodness! There's a Discworld thread!
Here's a toast to truth, justice, freedom, reasonably priced love and a hard-boiled egg!
(And may I just add here how Night Watch is my absolute favourite in the whole series? Just the right measure of comedy to balance the tragedy)

Re: The Discworld Thread
You have good taste. Aka, that's also my favourite.
(I really ought to find out more about Les Mis so I can get the references to it, but it works well enough without it and I have other stuff to not do. I'll get around to it at some stage.)

Re: The Discworld Thread
I think Night Watch is everybody's favourite because of how powerful it is.
I've only seen the movie, but it was enough to get that Vimes is a Javert who handles his moral struggles a lot better (successfully suppressing his own darkness as opposed to committing suicide) and Carcer is an evil Valjean ("Stealing a loaf of bread? No, murdering the baker and stealing the bakery, that's more your style"). Nobby is also, in most respects, Gavroche, and Reg is pretty much Enjolras, although getting shot for him is not the end. And the whole book is a deconstruction of the idea of the "glorious revolution", but not as dark as the Les Mis deconstruction (spoiler: EVERYBODY DIES).
They did the job they didn't have to do, and they died doing it, and you can't give them anything. Just leave them alone. Forever.
