Other mystery anime/manga?

Post by kaze »

heya~

well i have to say one thing first: I am a huge nazo otaku (aka mystery geek) and they are my favorite genre.. now knowing this.. i hope other DC fans are mystery fans as well... and read mystery manga as well

I've watched/read

Detective Conan (Obviously!)
Detective Academy Q (Tantei Gakuen Q)
Clamp School Detectives
Death Note
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni
MONSTER
Kindaichi Shounen no JIkenbo (Kindaichi Case files).. tho this one is only 2 chapters.. if anyone knows where I can get it.. gimme a shoutout much appreciated!
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (some consider it mystery.. so i am told..)
and (currently reading) MPD Psycho..

any other recommendations? and Why? Which was your fave mystery anime/manga?

There are 50 volumes of the Kindaichi manga in all, as well as a long-running anime series, three drama series, and a few specials. As far as the manga goes, Tokyopop has it licensed in the US and has released 17 volumes.  I'm not sure how accessible the English manga is online, but there are a few torrents containing raw manga available.

As far as other mystery anime, I've watched Tantei Gakuen Q in full and seen a few episodes of Kindaichi.  TGQ was decent, though I don't feel the series had a real ending, probably due to the fact that it ended before the manga was completed.  The drama that aired last year wrapped things up much more nicely.

I suppose I outta plug Nijuu Mensou no Musume (The Daughter of Twenty Faces) which will feature the Shoujo-Tanteidan (Detective Girls) as opposed to our (favorite?) Shounen-Tanteidan.  Nice animation and pacing, and the storyline is based (loosely) on the classic Japanese detective fiction of Edogawa Rampo.  Check out the Live-eviL releases, of course.

Are all of the ones mentioned in this topic good? I tried Detective Academy Q and it's pretty awesome. Although it can't compare to Detective Conan >:D

I am not sure if this appropriate or not, but I am sure it is not worth a new topic.
What about mystery games.
I am not going to include Myst I-V, Amerzone, and Resident evil since they are not strictly detective work.

1. Broken Sword I-V
2- Syberia I-II

Actually Benoit Sokal (Syberia) is a great game maker.
I haven't seen many other detective type mystry games.
Please notify me of any others.

Wow, karitaru, I could literally spend a week on this topic.
PC
Most of my PC games fit this genre => (http://club.ign.com/b/list/custom?lid=1 ... wn&sortC=6).  However, if you haven't played Grim Fandango yet, that should be your top priority.   I love the Broken Sword series, do you like the cartoony first two or the 3d later installments?  There are some greatly under appreciated games in this genre.  I enjoy the Tex Murphy games, but you have to be open to scifi.  I also love Jane Jensen's Gabriel Knight series, but you have to okay with its occult/supernatural elements (She has another game coming out this year, but it isn't Gabriel Knight).  If you liked Broken Sword, there are a slew of detective games that are oriented on secret society mysteries like the first Broken sword game, Shadow of the Templar.  Martin Mystere (Crime Stories in the US) and Runaway are both good detective cartoon games.  Laura Bow is an older series that I enjoyed about a reporter solving murders.  Home of the Underdogs has some good detective games you can't find anywhere else and SCUMM (script creation utility for maniac mansion), which was used to make several good games which fit this genre, is available across many platforms now. (psp, ps2, dreamcast, wii, windows, linux, xbox, nds,...).  The detective game genre is taxonomically a subgenre of the adventure genre.  Thus, a great source of titles of these PC games would be adventure game websites like justadventure.com.
Saturn/Sega CD
Also, since this is a forum for a japanese anime, there are several great japanese detective games.  Snatcher, originally a saturn game, is the only one I can think of that has a translated version in circulation, but I have several detective games for japanese saturn.  (They aren't in IGN's database so they aren't on my list above).  Snatcher (english translation) is on Sega CD, but could be played on a pc using a sega cd emulator.
DS
Jake Hunter, Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, Hotel Dusk, Touch Detective

x64, man your post is a gold mine.
Of course I appreciate the cartoonish first two instalments to the the third. I haven't played the fourth yet.

Thank you for the recommendations. I always complained about the lack of games that I could play. Now I think this should keep me busy for a long time.

You should definitely check out the Phoenix Wright/Apollo Justice Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban in Japan) games on the DS. A lot of the game takes place investigating doing detective work, which is then used to theorize about the cause of the murder in court which is then countered by a prosecutor who presents new evidence that creates an entirely new and even crazier theory about what happened and who did it!

Ace Attorney games are what led me to Detective Conan!  :)
