Grave of the fireflies almost made me cry. It was done so beautifully and tragically. I think Arietty wasn't the best movie made by Ghibli. It would have made a much better story if the boy died in my opinion.

The Japanese version of Arietty leaves it ambiguous whether or not the boy lived; the narration, I think, is done in such a way that it could be told equally be told as a dying memory as a later reminisce. The British version also never states whether he lives or dies, but the phrasing of the opening narration indicates that the story's something he looks back on frequently in later years, suggesting that he's alive. It's only the American version that adds an epilogue explicitly stating that he lives, which I think is the biggest change that Disney's been allowed to make to a Ghibli movie for years.

Actually, I think Disney not being allowed to change so much as a frame of animation and very little in the way of dialogue is what's been delaying From Up on Poppy Hill, because Disney is iffy about dealing with one of the major plot twists, which is that
Spoiler:
Umi and Shun may be half-siblings, even though they're in love with each other and say as much. They turn out to not be, but there's a while where each is tussling with the idea that they're in love with their half-sibling, and of course it comes with heavy implications of infidelity on the part of their father, also later proven false.
Deal with it, Disney. FUOPH is gorgeous.

I haven't seen all of them - yet -, but from the ones I have, my favourite is probably Nausicaä.
I probably would have liked Tales From Earthsea more if I hadn't read LeGuin's books before, which had me go Huh? during most of the movie :x
But yeah, a Ghibli movie of the Tombs Of Atuan would indeed be a fascinating prospect. As long as they are a bit more faithful this time :x

(Also, I watched them all with Japanese audio and English subtitles, so if you guys watched the English audio, there may be differences.)
If  ;), :D, ;D, ::), :P, :-X, :o or >:D are attached, that paragraph may not be 100% serious. Seriously.

Earthsea was the reason for the long rift between Hayao Miyazaki and his son Goro; Earthsea was Goro's directorial debut and it was, to put it lightly, not up to Ghibli's standards. Hayao had been against the creation of the movie initially, believing that Goro didn't have the experience to direct a movie. Later, though, Hayao said that "because it was made honestly, it was made good", which is really sweet. They worked together on Ponyo, and the scene where Sosuke's father sends him apologies using morse code was a direct message from Hayao to Goro, which is adorable. Goro recently directed From Up On Poppy Hill, which I loved, so it looks like he's into the swing of it now.

Ghibli is actually the one studio where I always watch the dub, because Disney gets such good voice actors and the terms of Ghibli's contracts guarantee that there won't be any changes to the plot.

I loved Howl's moving castle, so I think for the oment it's my favorite. But I still have a lot to watch. I saw Spirited Away when I was little, and it scared me, but I liked it somehow. Studio Ghibli is the best!!

I've watched the movie since reading that theory and... it's definitely hard to unsee.

I offset it by looking up videos of Dakota and Elle Fanning recording their lines. THEY ARE TOO PRECIOUS FOR WORDS.
