Studio Ghibli

Post by mangaluva »

So why isn't there a Studio Ghibli topic already? Some of the best animators in Japan and we don't have a topic to honour them? For shame. I just got to see From Up On Poppy Hill online and I need to squee about how gorgeous it is. Also how surprised I was by how the romantic subplot twisted (didn't think Ghibli normally went in for plots like that... wow) and how I actually cried at the happy resolution. Especially Umi's mum's face when she's hugging her. Aaaaaah...

I have to say, I think Porco Rosso is my favourite Ghibli movie. I'm not entirely sure why, it just utterly charms me. What's your favourite?

Film4 was having some kinda channel thing about Studio Ghibli not long ago so I have Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away recorded. Keep forgetting to watch them though ^^;. From what I hear they're pretty good though.

(Technically I've already watched Spirited Away during a class near Christmastime or something in year 8, but everyone was talking so I could barely hear a thing :/)

I loved Grave of the Fireflies, but it's too depressing to watch more than once.

Spirited Away, Whisper of the Heart, and The Cat Returns were pretty charming and are among my favorites as well.

The Cat Returns is one of my favourites after Porco Rosso, largely because of the Baron, especially his very dapper fight scenes. I love Whisper of the Heart too, the prequel. The girl's struggle to write her first novel speaks to me on an emotional level.

I adore Grave of the Fireflies, but yeah, it's heartbreaking, especially when you know that the novel it's based on is basically the author's autobiography about his and his sister's life and death in the war, and he

There is nobody who does not like Spirited Away, ever. My Anime Society's going to open our movie screenings with it.

Just IMO, but Tales From Earthsea isn't one of their best efforts. There are some very confusing aspects to it that come pretty much entirely out of nowhere, like Erran's Shadow-self and Teru
Spoiler:
being a dragon
Both of them come pretty much out of nowhere with nothing resembling an explanation offered, and there are a lot of random little moments that seem very out of context. It's a lot like Howl's Moving Castle in that they're pared down from fantasy novels, but Howl managed to keep together, IMO, a plot and characterizations that you could actually follow (even if Howl and Sophie's relationship seemed to pop up quite fast out of nowhere). Earthsea gives you a strong feeling that you need to read the books to understand anything that's going on, which has the unfortunate effect of making it feel more like a marketing tool than a movie.
Also, I just never found anything remotely engaging about Erran's character. I want a movie about Sparrowhawk XD

Partial agreement. I read more about the books of "earthsea" because of the movie. It would be nice if Sparrowhark(Ged) early days "A Wizard of Earthsea" and Tenar (Arha) early days "The Tombs of Atuan" were made into movies, especially the later book where the two met.

Wow, it's been such a long time since I read that series.. I think that would be a good idea, to combine Sparrowhawk and Tenar's early days, then have them meet. Then they could just skip over to events of Tehanu :P
The movie's about Erran? Why not Ged? T_T

From Up on Poppy Hill and Whisper of the Heart for me. :)
