*SPOILER FREE* Discussion Thread: Detective Conan Files 850-852

Post by KnightusMaximus »

This topic is for SPOILER FREE discussions of the current manga case. If you have glimpsed progression in the case that has not yet been covered by DCTP releases, this is not the correct topic to be discussing in. Spoilers from the latest case, no matter their source, may be discussed in the other topic on this case, which can be found here. Please read the rules in the first post of that topic as well!

In other words: If DCTP has not released the file in question, it is NOT to be discussed in this topic, not even in spoiler boxes.

Why is this necessary?

Due to the files making their way onto the internet in full much earlier than before, we will be experimenting with having spoiler free discussion threads for all the latest cases. This will give everyone the opportunity to proceed with following and discussing the series in the manner they are most comfortable with.

What happens with the other type of discussion topic?

They stay exactly the same. The topics that we have been discussing the files in while using spoiler boxes need to operate by the exact same rules as before, especially for the time being. There are several reasons for this. Foremost, people may accidentally stumble into that topic (either from the index or without seeing that there is a "spoiler free" topic available). As a result, the old rule of "if DCTP hasn't released it, use a spoiler box" will still apply as much as ever, at least for now.

What happened to Files 847-849?

These files do not have a translation at the moment. If you would like to volunteer to translate them (or any future case, because we could always use more translators), please PM me. That said, while we would like to get them translated and edited, DCTP simply may not be able to do translations for every single case from now on. Most people on the team are working adults and have many other obligations in life now. (Update: We have a translator for these files now, so they're coming!)

of course, I was already expecting this...

is there a chance they will be translated though? I'm not trying to be pushy or anything, because I understand how jobs are important (and a personal life is too), but I can't actually translate Japanese myself (if I could I'd offer to help and translate things).

Since I don't think anyone would want to see this topic which was actually dedicated to case/plot discussion turn into a release-date speculation thread...

Jodie was extremely out of character stupid in this case. While she was never Conan or Akai level, Gosho basically made her into an idiot to force the plot forward in an extremely awkward way. Jodie was never this bad in the Vermouth or Kir arc. I'm not impressed with the plot right now. Just had to get that off my chest.

I kind of felt it this way when I read it. But now I think about it, it's more like her underlying emotions for "Shuu" got the better of her. Clearly, her judgement seems to be below par whenever it's something related to Akai.

It has been the case with several characters in this arc : Jodie but also Conan at times. It's all too straightforward and lacks subtlety IMO.

The "Jodie is too Shuu-focussed to notice problems" scenario was done well enough in the Teito bank heist and Thirteen Red shirts. Jodie's stupid moves, like chasing Scar Akai blindly, were believable because she was in situations directly involving someone she thought might be Akai. Even though she lost her composure around Scar Akai, Jodie didn't completely lose her head during the unrelated case/hostage crisis events. This way, Jodie's portrayal was balanced between an emotional crisis and maintaining the skill she showed in the Vermouth and Kir arcs.

In the pickpocket case, it was just Conan's words to bother her. She also completely lost control of her mouth in an uncharacteristic fashion because some random guy talked to her. Emotional distress from Shuu's death currently feels like a bad excuse for Jodie to give insider info to Bourbon to progress the plot. It would have made a lot more sense if Gosho had written the convo between Jodie and Bourbon in 850 pgs 9 and 10 to be between Conan and Jodie instead with Bourbon or Vermouth listening in. It seems like the only point was to have Jodie give Bourbon a business card, something which could have been written to happen on page 7 instead.

Definitely, but this is the most egregious so far and it screws with well-established characters. Gosho really needs to put this arc down and start fresh. Starting with the train case, I feel like Gosho has written himself into a corner that he can't gracefully escape from, so the plot developments are coming out stilted.

With the plot as it is, it's pretty clear Bourbon is going to find out Conan/Akai's identity, but will either be killed (Gosho has never killed a multicase character) or have some hold put on him that will prevent him from reporting back to the Org. I have a feeling that hold is going to be something like "Ran looks like Akemi which makes Bourbon feel bad about turning in Shinichi". Well, chap 900/20th anniversary will be in a year, so maybe Gosho will end this soon and start something better in time for that case...

I found it annoying that Haibara's B.O. sense didn't come up when Vermouth was just a meter away from her. Or is there something I don't remember? (I know generally we shouldn't expect much from Haibara, but still...)

Too busy raging at Jodie, so I forgot about this. Gosho likely intended to surprise everyone by revealing a suspect was Bourbon working with Vermouth, so Haibara's radar conveniently malfunctioned.

She was surprised by the info Conan threw at her. Specially the part which crushed her hopes that Akai was alive. It's understandable.

@edit: lol completely ninja'd. well, whatever.

...which wasn't much of a surprise anyhow, considering the rampancy of "He's lying about what happened at the bank heist, so he must be Bourbon!" over in the spoiler cbox back when only 850 was out. :-X

This. Hopefully Gosho just burried the Haibaradar forever.

Haibara thinks that this Akai person is like Dai just because he drinks...coffee? Huh? Did I miss something? :x

Loved the Bourbon/Vermouth teamwork by the way. :D
