When he sees the light, though, he knows he's too late.
Why is this?

Spoiler:

1) He's a driver (lorry/bus/train/ect) and realises he's late because someone else is driving the vehicle (it'd have to be dark though)
-Question: What time of day does this take place in?
2) 'late' = dead, he sees the light at the end of the tunnel

I swear I've heard this one before, but since I've forgotten the answer, I'll start my random guesses.

Spoiler:

1) He's a bomb specialist and wasn't in time to diffuse the bomb and he saw the fire from the explosion
2) He's a surgeon and saw that the light saying that there was surgery in progress, meaning he was late to the operation
3) He was supposed to be at work before sunrise

Pretty sure they're all wrong, because none of them sound right....

First a few joke answers

He is Gary Hobson of Early Edition. He was try to stop a car that was about to stall on the tracks, but the crossing guard was already down, ad the car was already stalled on the tracks. Light in this case being the lights on the crossing guard.

Christmas one

The Ghost of Christmas Future is on his way to see Scrooge only to see Scrooge see the light. He is too late. This time two ghost did it.

A mountain rescue member is looking for someone only to see the lights of the copter taking off to being them to safety.

Are the light real lights, or does "see the light mean" now understands the others point of view.

The groom is on his way to his wedding only to see police car lights and then he "sees the light' ( His bride learned about the fact he is wanted)

that should mean the job would either be a count courier, Mail carrier, Lawyer or Counsel, any of those be that job of delivering the message of the stay or pardon etc. By the way it is possible a Prison guard could be asked to deliver the message if other means ( like phones being down)
happen.
