It's the fact that Kid can pass as a woman is what makes his crossdressing stand out.

Unless it's done for comedy (in other manga/anime) isn't this normal?

Just finished the latest chapter. Frankly, I have no idea what to make of it. Confuses the heck out of me. :(

Can someone help by explaining it a bit simpler?

Well, basically the chapter tells the past history of the mansion and inhabitants. First part was about a myth of sorts involving a "vampire" that impaled all his foes.

In the next part, Conan and Heiji figures out the tricks used by the "vampire", and some more is revealed about the maid's mother's death. At the end, Ran and Kazuha were trying to open a freezer (where there is most likely a dead body).

Here's my ideas:
Spoiler:
It's obvious that the maid is the murderer, and she is murdering the people who caused the death of the mother. She just simply used the "master is the vampire" thing to scare people and stuff. Towards the beginning, she let slip that she knew where the torture chamber was, and the last panel obviously shows that she is the murderer. I think she used some items in the torture chamber to do that.
Before that though, I thought the maid was Kaito Kid....well, that theory is gone!
Why do detectives use handkerchiefs while opening doors?
Well, they don't...

I came to a rather different conclusion about the maid.

The missing Hakuya seems to have set up all these tricks because it was his house construction, and his suspicious orders, and his strange behavior that indicated he knew about them and was testing them. If anyone were planning a murder/scare plot it would be Hakuya. The problem is Hakuya seems rather dead now (the blood trail on his face) and someone else is taking advantage of his tricks, suggesting Hakuya had a co-conspirator or one of his relatives/staff found out his plan in advance.
Hakuya called the maid to meet with him secretly, and told her not to let the butler know. The butler is quite well informed about all the icky family dynamics meaning he is nosy. Hakuya didn't trust the butler either. The butler also secretly summoned Kogoro to the house which at first blush should clear him from suspicion unless he thinks he can trick Kogoro or wants Kogoro as a witness. Assuming the butler is trustworthy, my gut feeling is that Hakuya was planning to set the maid up as part of his vampire tricks, and maybe even kill her. He didn't like her very much according to the butler, so that fits.

I do think the maid is hiding something because of her lies (assuming the butler is telling the truth), but I suspect it would be to investigate her mother's death and her family (she looks like her father?) or something like that. She is way too forward with information compared to a normal case culprit. She could still be the culprit, but I feel it is less likely than one of the other family members.

Regarding the scene at the end, I doubt she is going to jump on Ran or Kazuha or something like that. The maid attacking Ran and Kazuha would not be very planned and out of character with the rest of the crimes, and Gosho wouldn't show the lurking maid's identity if it was anything serious (it would be a shadowman instead).

@Jefufuh,

Thanks for that. I need to think more on this before proposing any of my theories.

Chronodekar: No problem man. :)

Chekov: The butler sure seems suspicious as well since he also tried to blame the maid with having an "ultirior motive", and he also seems to know the secrets and locations of the mansion. Hakuya could also be orchestrating the deaths while pretending to be dead, but I don't think that they have much of a motive for killing people.

Also, I didn't mention that the maid was going to kill Ran or Kazuha, and I don't think she would, because as you said, it is out of character from the rest of the crimes. (Also, Ran and Kazuha are main characters and nothing is going to happen to them.)
However, the maid is hiding something in there (obviously) and if she didn't murder anyone it's possible that she is a co-conspirator or something of that sort.
I was also really interested in the picture with the "vampire". There are actually lots of times when it could be tampered with, such as the time when the Analog dude processed the photo. It could also have been a trick set up by the maid, butler, or the master himself. (I totally hate it when Conan is like, "I got it!" but we don't know what he's actually thinking about.)

I definitely think Hakuya is dead because he has had the same expression and blood trail in all his appearances. He did set up some of the tricks though. He has been changing his behavior for months to be more vampire-like, probably to give him an excuse to do something that otherwise would be suspicious (hide a leaf in the forest). The locked refrigerator was bought by Hakuya. I wonder if the mirror wall is directly behind it? (Conan lit the space up) That would explain the drag marks of someone moving the body there for the picture after someone spilled flour.
I forget if Hakuya had the house remodeled too. If not, some of the secret passages and items could have been left over from the family mess earlier. In the nailed shut window case, the owner had the house remodeled so he could find out if his spouse was cheating by observing from a hidden passage. It might be similar this time.

I forgot I posted this at DCW and not here, but the trick is that it is a two way mirror. There is a space behind the glass and if that space is lit up from the inside, timed with the camera flash, then the man's face would be visible. Conan checking the mirror by touching it to observe the reflection is a classic test. Conan even lights it up to be sure which is an even better test.

Edit: Just had a nasty thought. It would be hard to haul a whole body upwards to make it disappear without a lot of weights, some stout rope, and an elaborate setup. It would be a lot easier if it was just the man's head. There is a guillotine in the foreign torture room....

Hehe.
However, seeing how the chain of the guys monocle seems to be hanging 'upwards', it might be just a life-sized picture. Which could be rolled in using a spring triggered by somebody opening the door, and then transported away with a glider. That would need a pretty sophisticated construction, but then again, Hakuya had plenty of time to prepare.

The butler still seems suspect... maybe he lied about the master not trusting him, and actually Hakuya told him to find some police to witness the perfect vampire murder? (It's not like he would worry a lot about being caught if he's going to die soon anyway.) Also, the butler is the one who described Hakuya completely like a vampire.
