I don't know. It's not like Ran still thinks he's wandering off for no good reason. But, don't you think that even if she thinks he is a genius kid at this point, ignoring him when he dashes off would be irresponsible of her, given his propensity to do dangerous things like climb from window to window on very narrow ledges and confront gang bosses by himself… (links might be spoilers, volume 52+)

BTW, I'm still on Kudo/Conan, I think it's human tendency to go with the main character

Though it's human nature I try to avoid that.  For me a story won't be good unless even the unsignificant character have a presence of character depth.  Stories that are too main character-centric get irritating to me xD.  Not that I don't love Shinichi, I just try to love everyone else too even though they're just cardboard cut-outs.

With that said my fav char would probably be Gin.  He likes killing things to an obsessive degree and is probably the only person in the org that doesn't secretly want to bring it down (Sherry, Vermouth, Kir, the people he killed already, etc...).  Most importantly he has preetyful hair~!  Hopefuly he'll forever be shrowded in mystery or else he'll probably have some horrible sob story that'll make me feel sorry for him (and not like him as much).  Vermouth would have been my fav (skilled in killing, has nice hair) but her backstory is more likely to be exposed in the story xD.

Tough choice, my first place is a tie between Shinichi and Kaitou Kid lol

But then comes, Vermouth, Haibara, Gin, and Heiji after them.

Akai because he is pretty intelligent and skilled
Gin because of his outstanding deduction power he showed in more than one occasion
Kaito because of his personality and all the things he does

Almost all the characters are awesome, but my top two is always the same:

1. Conan
2. Haibara

The only character I hate is Eisuke, he just seems very out of place.

Yusaku annoys me sometimes, because when he is around you know Conan will magically mess up for some reason.

Well, there are so many cool, smart and mysterious characters...

...that I choose Mouri Kogoro.

In a way he catches the attention because he's not cool, smart and so one.
Obviously he's funny, but he can also prove clever, especially when he's very concerned in the case.

For instance I remember this case with his youth friends, from university judo club, when he showed an impressive sense of justice, by solving the case (with Conan's help, a little). And this end, with this judo hold... One of the best moments of Detective Conan, I think. There is also this case at a seaside resort, with Kizaki's ring he found by deducing from Eri's behaviour, or something like that.

Not as simple as he looks, this character can be seen as the typical one of a generation. A rational one also, essential for the manga and its atmosphere.

I think the thing about Kogoro is that he doesn't try.  His idiot statements usually come from him saying "oh it's nothing, it's obviously suicide" or something lazy like that.  The cases that he actually cares about he doesn't do too bad .  He has to be decently smart for Eri to fall for him afterall xD.
