Actually I just thought of a way to make things "disappear" in a water tank. It has to do with some basic physics. It should be possible if the turtle is placed at a special point in the tank( maybe at the top and the side of the wall) with a magnet (which is still a theory I think is far-fetched).
Water has a greater refraction index than air(check Wiki) and will bend the light rays. If the light is bent enough there will be blind spots and possibly from different angles too. However,  I don't know if the refraction index for water is enough for such a "large" thing as a turtle to disappear. It can be increased with salt and other things that can increase the water's density though.

And this still doesn't solve the problem of actually stealing the gem.

The problem is they drained the tank which would get rid of any refracting water. At this point I have only two ideas in order of preference.

Kaito Kid broke in and installed a fake rock in the tank ahead of time that is hollow and has a big hole in the bottom, rigged it to some hard to see string, lifted it with the winch, moved the turtle underneath probably using a strong magnet attached to a collapsible pole and set the rock down on it to hide the turtle. All of this happened quickly in the confusion and the winch was set to go on Kid's signal when the turtle was swimming close to the right place (This explains why there was no places for the turtle to climb out and rest. The trick might fail otherwise because at 8:00 the turtle had to be moving around so Kaito Kid could wait until it swam close. As long as it is close to 8:00, it's good enough) The police missed the rock during their search because the strings were detached. The collapsible stick with magnet was and is currently hidden under Sera/Kid's hat which was close to Ran and made her phone screen go black while waiting.

The second is that Jirokichi is an accomplice because he is in disguise (Jii) with a special mask made to seem pinchable if Kid pinches it in the right place or Jirokichi is collaborating with Kid for some reason (???). This explains why Jirokichi is acting meek and OOC going after Kid. Kid hid the turtle behind that blush mermaid sign (stuck it there with a magnet hidden behind the sign?) and Jirokichi took the turtle out of the tank when he checked it and stuffed it in his shirt. Maybe Kid put some instructions on that card he stuck in the floor if Jirokichi is not in disguise. The police didn't search Jirokichi because they are dumb and "Sera" pinched him. The magnet was close to Ran when Sera was hiding it so it made her phone go black.

Or maybe there is something else that makes more sense than either of these. I am pretty much ready to give up. IMHO there is just no satisfactory deduction with Kid cases...

IMK, I think nobody has pointed these out, well correct me if I'm wrong.

so my two suspects are:
Sera and Sonoko

Sera had the guts to be (bossom) inspected by Sonoko. I think it's weird for a girl to allow that confidently no matter what size she has, and eventhough she's boyish.(in addition to what other people already pointed that she said that she feels bad for being in the same inspection group with Ran)

Sonoko didn't even try to inspect Ran when it's her turn and reasoned out she must be Kid. Sonoko/Kid didn't have any reservations in touching Sera's though, knowing Sera as male. However, the weakness in this argument is that Sonoko said that indeed Sera's is flat as board. If So=K, he would not have that comment.

The weakness with Sera=Kid theory is that Sera ask Ran about the hat earlier. If Se=K, what's the purpose of asking it from Ran?

The counter-argument for that, maybe Kid knocked down Sera during her bathroom break and disguised as her. However knowing Sera as Jet-Kune do practitioner and a good detective as well, I believe she wouldn't fall victim.

*excuse my long narrative*
So I conclude, neither of the two is Kid. Maybe it's Ran?

So, the trace iron content of a diamond attracted the turtle to a magnet....

Image

The amount of iron it takes to color a diamond is in the 1-10 parts per million range, so lets say about 0.00005% of the diamond is iron by weight. Lets say about 400 carats worth of diamonds (a lot!) were stuck to the turtle's belly which is 80 grams of diamonds. That gives about 0.004g or 4 mg iron attached to the bottom of the turtle. Iron is about 380–450 ppm in human blood. So Gosho, why is it when you take an MRI, which is one of the strongest magnetic fields normal people would ever encounter, is your blood not ripped out of your body?

A magnet strong enough to drag a turtle by a few milligrams of iron would have noticeable attractive effects on any sizable metal objects close to the tank, such as the police might have.

On a different note, the translation regarding Sera's description of the hat (panel with "same shape of wear") on the 16th page is really awkward and stilted. It was the hat she brought to the train after all, not one she found. Anyone got the original line so I can attempt a retranslation?

KnightusMax: It's でもさ。。。 君が拾ってくれたこれには。。。 なぜか兄がよく帽子につけてたカタがついてる気がするんだよ。
Chekhov: Two not very literal, and possibly flawed readings:
Chekhov: "For some reason, it feels like wearing one of the hats my elder brother often wore."
Chekhov: "For some reason, it feels like one of the hats my elder brother often wore."
Zenthisoror: "For some reason, it feels like its got the same wear in it that my brother got in the hats he often wore."
Zenthisoror: @Chek: That's basically the gist of what she's saying.
Chekhov: So maybe, "For some reason, it feels like it has the same imprint as my elder brother's well worn hats."

true.i had the same thoughts, though not as detailed as what you mentioned. (i knew that the iron in diamonds is subtle though i didn't know the numbers and all.)

This chapter was terrible, absolutely terrible. Nothing to save.

Funnily enough, the iron inclusion comment is immediately ignored in favor of "iron in the bait food", which would make much more sense. (It'd still make very little sense, but it'd definitely make more sense than MAGNETIC CRYSTALS! LOL)

Now that I read it translated, I didn't find it as bad as you claim it is. But that's just me.

IMO, this case doesn't even make the top 5 terrible cases of my list (the absolute worst in the list is still the Conan/Heiji showdown case).

^This

Too much fanservice in my taste, and it was predictable that Kid was deguised as Sera.

Kid is obviously a wizard and therefore excluded human iron out of his "magic trick" with sorcery.

Basically.

yeah, that was basically my thoughts as well. Depending on how much iron was in the food, the turtle could be attracted more easily to the magnet. Although that's obviously not what Gosho was going for because of the diamonds comment, but oh well.

Said it before and I'll say it again: the only thing good about this entire case was Sera. At least I was amused by her actions.

It was a typical Kid case: ridiculous and implausible.

As far as the puzzle's solution went, I was more concerned about the turtle's welfare. Happy to see it's okay! ♥

Lots of fanservice this time. Uber-panchira! And I'm glad Aoko wasn't around to hear her dad say she's flatter than Ran.

Everyone has different standards and tastes, of course, but I found this highly entertaining. Looking forward to the Heiji case!
