Sadly, I have no experience with learning German as a foreign language
I suppose your local Goethe-Institut would qualify as good but I have no idea whether they are cheap as well :x

The basic stuff is free for additional service you have to pay.

Meep! I checked that out, and it's pricy. ~_~* A standard course starts around $400 (~325 euro). A skype-lesson is $40 (~32.50 euro) for a 45-minute session. Nice, but well outside of my budget for the moment. ~_~*

Maybe I can help a bit. 

I asked my mother how she learned German. She thought for a while and told me that she got a dictionary and (this might sound stupid) just read trough it, trying to memorize as much words as possible. Vocabulary is everything, since you can't do anything without it, so I think it's the best to look up words you think you will need and memorize them.

The next thing she learned was making sentences. German and English sentences seem (when kept easy) not very different.
It's both subject+verb+object
Ich mag Kuchen.
I like cake.

The worst thing (I talk about experience I had in learning English) are the tenses. They are not easy to compare to the German ones.


The first tense you should begin with is the Präsens (present tense). Then you can continue with the Perfekt (present perfect).

Furthermore, you should practise to conjugate verbs and to decline nouns. I guess the last thing is the worst part because the article can be masculine, feminine or neutral in German.

One of the first things you always learn when you start with a new language is the declination of personal pronouns. In German it's:

Singular ich
              du
              er, sie, es
Plural   wir
              ihr
              sie

Okay, I don't know how much you already knew, but this should be a list of thing you should start with and practise a lot.

There should be every grammar-things you must know.

A last advice from myself: Always (I mean always) look for new vocabulary. No matter if you take lessons or teach it to yourself, vocabulary is the key to every language.
