Hope I'm not resurrecting a thread that's already dead. :p
I used to want Haibara to stay a child and have her childhood and it wouldn't surprise me if that's how it ended, but I would prefer for her to go back to being Shiho. Maybe it's because I'm getting older but while I think that being Haibara has definitely made it possible for her to open up, there's no getting around the fact that she's an adult. When she interacts with the Detective Boys they're not her peers. She's more like a mother hen/big sister figure to them. Not only was she a grown woman, but she was one that handled a lot of responsibility. While she's certainly grown through becoming a child if this was a real life situation I think it'd be sad if she was forced to grow up again.
She was the head of a science lab for a criminal organization. She's been in adult relationships and she's currently laying low to protect herself. Because of her past and her intelligence as an individual, she's mentally mature beyond her years. To become 18 again she'd be waiting at least 10 years and that's not forgetting that she'd be almost 30 in terms of actual time spent living on the earth. That's too long in my opinion. That's also why I'm not a fan of MitsuAi as a couple. He might be mature for his age but the thing is so is she. Plus she's exceptional. He brings nothing to the table as a partner both now and in the foreseeable future not because he's not a bright kid but because he lacks experience and he'll be reasoning like a child for a long time to come. Shiho is a grown woman. No matter how much you love a kid, there comes a time when you want and need to be in the company of other adults that are at your level.
Conversely, while Conan/Shinichi is a very smart guy he still approaches things like a child to a large extent. Everything about him from his insistence on doing things his way to the naivety in his relationship with Ran shows that he's not nearly as mature as he thinks he is (Incidentally I'm not on the AiCon bandwagon either). Unlike Shinichi, Ai has a degree that she can fall back on so it's not like she can't get a good job after being cleared. If she testified against the Black Organization she probably wouldn't be prosecuted and since she'd been brought in as a child, I would think that she'd most likely end up doing a bit of community service and told to attend various classes so that she could rehabilitate/work on her resume.
And I also don't buy the reasoning that because she wouldn't be physically a child any more that she'd be without a support network. She's not banished from babysitting the Detective Boys or staying with Agasa and with the traits she's acquired through being around them: i.e. being more open, willingness to "show herself friendly", sharing, and just being more giving of herself, etc, it's not like she couldn't make new friends around her own age or older.
While I'm warmer to the idea of Shiho x Akai as a couple because they're both adults and their story would be interesting (and Jodie's *REALLY* annoying), I would be fine with her being single and eventually finding someone at work -or not-. And since she does have Akai to go back to somewhat, she could even meet new people via her friendship with him. Sort of like how she did him a favour where he was trying to infiltrate the organization.
It's kind of long but what I guess what I'm saying is that I'd prefer for her to go back to being an adult because I don't see the point of reliving her childhood for 10+ years when she has other options available to her. That's not how I would write her story because even though the idea of a normal childhood is nice, she's not a normal person and speaking as a formerly gifted child turned adult, there's nothing worse than being forced into "normal" when that's not who you are. Especially when you're smarter than most of the people you're talking to but not given any credence because you're a kid. After already having responsibility that comes with being considered grown up, that's not a lot to look forward to.
It's all a moot point though. As a character I think she could go either way and I don't think she's fully decided on whether or not she's going to go back. Story wise though, I'll be pleasantly surprised if Gosho allows her to become an adult again. I'd probably write it differently but then if I was putting this into a novel my protagonist would most likely be either Akai or Shiho, so...

Re: Thoughts: Will Shiho Miyano Return?
In my opinion, Shiho will return to her real form in the future. Being a child is just the way to runaway from reality and you sure can't run away forever. She can't be Haibara forever even if her life was good as Haibara cause Haibara ain't real. And I'm sorry but there will never be Mitsuhiko+Haibara couple, Shiho 10 years older than him, she always act older than she supposed to be. So I think she will fit well with the kind of man like Okiya (He cool and he have bright side like Conan). But if Okiya is Akai I don't think they will be together. I really hope he not Akai, he seems to be someone special.
She will be Shiho again to find her lover, find her own life (with no one control it), become a person that she want to be and be happy.
