You got a point there.

He could have a tragic past that makes him redeemable. I personally hope he is just one of those villain types who has a split personality: friendly, logical, and polite while he is calm but when you hit the berserk button (TVTropes Warning!) (Akai) he flips out and goes mad laughing bloodlust ballistic.

I don't know if it means anything, but it seems to me that Conan is being watched pretty much from all sides now. There's someone living in his parental house, next to one of his confidants. There's someone going to school with Ran, whom he lives with. And now Kogorou has an apprentice, which means that not only will he frequent the place where Conan lives, he'll also be around when "Kogorou" solves cases. What's next, a mysterious child showing up and wanting to become a new member of the Detective Boys? Because that's pretty much the only thing missing at that point. I am pretty sure that Sera, Okiya and Amuro are connected in a way (in the case of the former two, we know for sure that there's something) and possibly closing in on Conan. Honestly, I'm just waiting for an exchange of meaningful looks between Amuro and one of the other new characters in a coming chapter.

On a more serious note, I hadn't actually noticed that before you pointed that out. I guess this guaranties that there will be a lot of plot coming up real soon (though with 800 coming up, i guess we already knew that).

She doesn't have the ability to "smell" members, she just recognizes most of them or deducts who they are disguised as! That's why she looked so scared when she first saw Akai(he is her sworn enemy (and her sister's boyfriend, what a scandal!), and why she is always keeping a close eye on her "test subject" Shinichi up to the point that she is living next to his house and hold one of his friends hostage. Why else would she say that the drug she was working on was a poison; how can you make a drug for an organization if you don't even know what you're making? This is also explains why she refuses to tell Conan anything related to the BO. Its even been hinted at: remember the case she solved? She is obviously a skilled detective. (The reason she hates publicity is to help keep the BO in the dark!)

Just to let others know, there is an completely innocent reason for asking to be an apprentice. Thank how famous Mouri's is. Why would not an up and coming detective ask to learn from one of the best? He might hope someday to be as good as Mouri someday. I know you (not me) must look for obvious clues everywhere. But be careful not to fall in the trap of expecting too much of what is likely another red herring. Surely Gosho would hide something important better then that.

There are two reasons why Gosho might add another secondary character:
1) A character who is supposed to be a love interest of an already existing character
2) It's a character related to the plot (the B.O.)

So unless the dude is actually Yumi's childhood friend, he'll end up being plot-related.

Being plot-related is not inconsistent with being Yumi's friend. Honestly, there is little chance but I like this idea. Though Yumi appeared to be an inconspicuous character，in last case，the love story of Chiba and Naeko, it was Yumi who stood out and I think this is a subtle sign that Yumi might play a much more important role as DC entering the closing stages. Otherwise, if Yumi is not a heavyweight whose love story matters, I don't see why Gosho created a new character for Chiba. As long as I can remember,  no people have an ex( I don't think Zinhei and Satou had ever been in a love relationship) in the Police Agency except for Yumi. 
According to her words( Vol.49 file 6 http://dctp.ws/V49-Reader/V49-6Read/A11.html), her ex at college was a pretty guy and she dumped him, thinking his personality was too childish. Amuro just fits the profile.

Conan was next to Akemi when she died, if she pulled a trick there, the universe will collapse right here and now, 'cause there is no way that Conan would not realize that she was faking. Even if Conan was assisting her act, the police, Kogoro and Ran were there as well, so even the J-drama trick would not work there.

plus the story of DC is built on the fact that Akemi is dead... like reason for Haibara's sorrow and Akai's lonyness and his reason of hatered of Gin. Plus unlike Akai, there is no 'Akemi' running around in DC universe as far as we know.

It would be hilarious if none of the new characters was actually Bourbon. Just like when I never suspected Araide then suddenly he was Vermouth (in disguise, but still) and we had suspicious characters like Jodie, Akai etc..
