This, combined with the fact that, at most, 15% of the series I want to watch end up "officially" streamed.  If I like a series, and it comes out reasonably priced and of good quality (meaning it has to have both a dub and sub, with very few exceptions), I'll buy it.

There's been some misunderstanding. I took the question as: why do you download anime instead of buying them. In this case, i doubt that it would be free. In my region, when i buy anime, they are often dubbed and badly because nothing really compare with the original voices once you heard them.

Because I have more privacy watching it and anime sold in my country is too expensive and is dubbed. Also it is faster to download than to wait to buy it on DVD.

I download all my stuff because I might like to watch it even if I don't have Internet at some point. (I already have all the English Case Closed DVDs, so that's not the issue.) Generally, streaming takes FOREVER to load for me, and if the stuff's on your computer, then the problem becomes a mute point. Plus, I like the satisfaction of knowing I 'own' everything.
