Re: The "Introduce Yourself" Topic
Compound function? I was thinking it was a function of a function, but that's a composite function. [runs off to check]
EDIT: Oh, I see. It is the same thing. Then, I shall provide you with an example.
Let f(x) = x2 + 3x + 2, and let g(x) = 2x - 1. A compound, or composite, function is that which operates on another. For instance, if you evaluated f(2), you would just put 2 in for all the x in the function and evaluate. (22 + 3(2) + 2 = 12)
For the compound function f(g(x)), you would do a similar thing, but you would insert g(x) for all x in f(x). So,
f(g(x)) = f(2x - 1)
= (2x - 1)2 + 3(2x - 1) + 2
= 4x2 - 4x + 1 + 6x - 3 + 2
= 4x2 + 2x.
The compound function g(f(x)) will work similarly.

I did all that. I failed at it. There's a reason I didn't take Advanced Higher Maths.

Re: The "Introduce Yourself" Topic
why use such a confusing example if you are going to talk about functions?
P.S i understand your post but why use such big(ish) equations.. when something like x+1 is more than enough

you see my friend, there's something in the internetz called Yahoo Answers - im sure secondary school level maths can get you answers in like 2 seconds xDSmoltaft73 wrote: Yep, I think we have one, but this is for those who need math questions answered, or needs homework help or something like that. I dont know where to put this topic, so I stuck it here.
My question:
How do you write a compound function?

Re: The "Introduce Yourself" Topic
Yes, but such a simple example would have been too boring (I'm a math major, if you're curious).
