I'm thinking the exact same thing.

I wonder if Gosho was inspired to use Sera after he was finished with Eisuke (who was forced upon him by his editors).

The editors made him do it excuse is still stupid, but at least this one I can kind of actually see happening. So you don't win any internets but you don't lose them either...

There are certainly similarities. Hits on Ran, more than she appears, sibling of another character, looks like the opposite gender a bit... it's like when Byakuya was brought into InuYasha. He was basically Kagura with more creepy.

Once we find out who she actually is (who she's related to, why she's there, etc) I'm guessing she'll only stay around for a few cases afterward.

How long it takes for us to find out who she really is though could take a while though, I mean heck look at Okiya :V

Apparently, yes.

So were Heiji and Kazuha actually, Gosho wanted Haibara to appear in the 10th volume but the editor asked for a rival instead (Heiji) and Haibara's appearance was pushed back to volume 19 (Conan drill p190). Naturally, once Heiji had been introduced, the love triangle option between Shinichi-Heiji and Ran had to be avoided, so Kazuha was added into the story.

It's also been said that the whole detective manga thing was actually a desire from Shônen Sunday's editors in order to rivalize with 'Kindaichi shonen no jikenbo' which came out in 1992 and sold extremely well. They asked Gosho who is a fan of detective stuff and he then made up the story and the characters.
