Perhaps if you read through the Round 1 rules, they'll make some more sense, at least as far as gameplay goes.  Things get really complicated these days, though.

Fastest way to learn these days is to play in the minis on IRC. You can play in twenty games in the span of one forum one. Given, the forum one is much more methodical and gives you much more time to reflect on both the results of your own actions and those of others, but you will sooner familiarize yourself with the basic idea of the game via a series of minis than you would in the forum variant. At least, that's how I see it.
