"Mistress" to me brings up the same connotation that kuro_shiro brought up, but obviously I realize there are alternate meanings.

"the female head of household" is too clunky to write over and over, also doesn't work as dialogue

"the missus" is not standard English

"the Mrs." is just not used that way

"Mrs. Wakamatsu" would be inaccurate linguistically although would be the second-best approximation grammar-wise

"the wife" is rude

"Wakamatsu-san's wife" is clunky and inaccurate
