I find it funny how people can say a character is unrealistic... Since there are like ~7billion humans on earth, not counting all the passed away people that also had a character
And Ran is 16-17 years old. At this age, most girls are usually still more innocent than older ones.
Most things are personal preferences. Some people like naive girls ,usually most men do *cough*, and women don't like those naive girls usually.
But... this example/explanation is just horrible:

Unlike RAN who all her life was protected (So what if her parents Divorced? 24% iff not more parents out there divorce ! and some with a HUGE family ( kids of 4 and up, actually I'd 6 and up but i didn't want to overexagerate since i don't know for sure) She never SAW the dark side, and probably never will
Like, seriously? Because 24%++ of children have divorced parents means that it's not affecting their live and personality?
Does that mean that because 14% of the world population is starving, it's a normal thing and not bad? Not affecting people and their life at all?
That counter was a bit extreme. But just because something happens a lot, doesn't mean it's good and nothing to worry about.
Ran ended up as a good, or let's say, not a "negative" person because her parents parted, but they didn't make a huge mess/fight out of it. Her father is a drunkard and was kinda unemployed, but he still cared for Ran. Ran also had friends at that time, mostly Shinichi and Sonoko.
If Haibara wouldn't have had her Sister (who is a bit like Ran too) during the BO time, she would have ended up way more "negative" too. Maybe she would have become a cold blooded killer instead.
You can also explain some of Rans character traits because of that divorce too:
+ dependable:
She was always together with Shinichi, since her childhood. In order to not be a burden for her parents, she asked Shinichi for help.
Tho you should also note, that Shinichi is such a character type. The whole police force is dependent on Shinichi, well, even the FBI (Jodie). Even Vermouth depends on Shinichi to take down the BO O.o" His mother also depended on him to solve a case for her. (and people wonder why he has such a big ego XD)
The only ones that aren't depend on him are Akai and Yuusaku.
That dependence is also a form of trust. Since Shinichi never let Ran down when she was in danger (for now).
+ Damsel in Distress
Personally, I don't think it true 100%. At least it doesn't just apply for Ran.
Haibara was a damsel in distress too once (or twice) :x Satou was kinda like that during her story about her father.
Basically you can say almost every femal character will become a damsel in distress once or more often in any manga/anime story... sadly :/
But Ran also saved other people or even Conan with her Karate. So she's not just the woman waiting for her rescue. Sure, she wants to be saved, but it's not like she'd idling around and does nothing while waiting. She tries to save herself too.
+ Naive
Like said, men usually like this type of women :x Probably why she got that trait.
+Weak (mentality wise)
Not sure why you think that. IMO, she's also strong mentality wise. Sure, she's sad that her bf disappeared, but does that mean she's weak? She's not going around and whines about it everywhere. She tries to not worry other people around her.
Her parents divorced/aren't together, she was poor before Conan appeared and now her friend disappeared and she encounters countless murders. And she never wanted to suicide or look for a scapegoat or do other stuff like that. She also didn't start to hate humanity.
She's still enjoying her life
+ pure, innocent and stuff
She's taught by her parents and also by Shinichi, that hating doesn't solve problems. That killing people is never a solution etc.
She also encountered a lot of nice people, that are trustworthy, justice oriented and loyal too. (Satou, Takagi etc.)
She doesn't really have a reason to be bad and distrust people.
IMO, it would be strange if she started to be bad and be mean. That would be "unrealistic"
Sarcasm wouldn't fit to her life either. (while it does to haibara)
But Ran isn't just "angelic".
She also get's jealous quite fast. She would also break someones bones when that person is attacking one of her friends. So she does use violence. IMO, a pure angelic type of character would not use violence at all.
She also get's angry (like at shinichi), but never get's angry without a reason.
Well, that's all personal opinion
But IMO, she's not completely like you described her. And there are also other characters that are a bit like Ran too.

Yeah, eh.........if you ever see a man in white who isn't a doctor or a scientist, you might just want to step away.
XDD
