Post by tantei okuoku »

Too high up on the screen, horrible font, and horrible color.

Are they still yellow and really small?

I found the letters to be sizable and the white color wasn't bad, though the TV screen always cuts off the letters at some point, which is really annoying.  I don't have a problem with the subs outside of the last thing though.  Standard subs for a DVD release for the most part, I guess.

DVD subs are actually very restricted as to font and color. There isn't anything they can do about it.

I do not remember the  conan subs being yellow I am fairly sure they are white, and I have never had a problem with them.

The placement and colour of the subs are bad.

Since he helps with translating stuff in his free time, does this mean he's the detective equivalent of Tomato?

Seriously, can someone answer this man? The font is good, the color is white which isn't bad at all, the translation is probably more accurate than the old subs on the internet (no offense to anyone in DCTP and more), there isn't annoying karaoke, the placement has always been fine. So what's wrong then? Or are you just bitching because you don't like that the dub on the disk uses different names and not the originals that are still in the subtitles?

Yes.  That's the only explanation.  How can ANYONE POSSIBLY LIKE a dub?  It must be an inside job. That's it; there can be no other reason. ::)
Conan324 wrote: thats bring another question, in the subs, do they use the original names?
Yes.  Yes they do; there's no trace of the dub names in the subtitles themselves.
Conan324 wrote: and one more thing, there are cases that has a dying message related to kanji, how did they replace these?
I'm pretty sure the sub and dub use two separate types of film: the raw that can be subbed and the dubbed, edited one.  There was original Japanese on one of the discs I used when I switched off the dub.

If anyone wonders why the font and colors can't be as fancy and colorful as fansubs...

^This here's the answer.  It's a technical thing that the disc can't handle too much of a certain color or certain layers would begin to bleed into each other.  Also, I remember Zac Bertschy answering this last year in his former Answerman position:
Simply put, there is a standard for subtitles on DVDs; they're in a readable font that will work in most every DVD player, and can be turned on and off on the fly. I've never seen "shaky" or "blurry" lettering; normally it's extremely crisp, bold yellow text that's in a generic, unassuming font. There are also technical reasons; as our columnist and longtime professional Justin Sevakis explained to me, DVD uses a simple 4-color TIFF file to render subtitles, and one of those is used for masking. So they have a limited color selection, and they can't use anti-aliasing.

Not only that, but the font has to be something very simple and very readable; you have to take into consideration what kind of crappy TVs people will be watching this stuff on. Your monitor is much crisper than an NTSC TV, so it's capable of rendering "fancy" subtitles that won't bleed color all over the screen or blend into the image.
(http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2007-01-19 <---the whole thing is here.  Zac is known to anger fansub supporters with his views, so I didn't quote the entire thing before this becomes a fight).

Aside from some technical problems like audio/video timing (and my crappy 10-year-old TV set), I haven't had much discrepancies with the releases.  I'm not particularly picky and the translation is gotten across decently (IMO), so I'm not bothered much.
