Shoot, if you want some "realistic" looking parents watch Seinen or Josei anime. Shounen is always like a "super hero movie." Whenever the hero is of teen years, his parents are not important. The main character is annoyed by their parents and their parents often act childish and irresponsibly to make the hero seem more mature than the parents and make it seem like he's capable of taking care of himself.....it's really funny how Shinichi reacts to his own parents at times.

I wouldn't say they are bad parents
Heizou and Shizuka are propably proud their son wants to fight crime like his father and don't forget his mother actually came all the way to Tokyo to make certain Heiji isn't meeting some wird people.

Shinichi's parents are a bit different, always looking for fun and such, but they were propably sure he would be okay(wouldn't destory their house XD) and professor Agasa and Ran would've kept an eye on him

last but not least Ran - I can't say this for sure but I bet she's been going shoping with her mother before, so this wasn't really a new situation for her and I could imagine Eri looked at first after them and would've come back when Kogoro and Ran wouldn't be doing alright.Also I could imagine Kogoro "stalking" Ran for the first few times to make sure she's okay XD
I mean he even kind off looks after Shinichi and now after Conan, although he doesn't show it much but on the other hand he's the type who would rise a real man!
And Shinichi went like every day with Ran to do the shopping.

Like this I wouldn't say they are "the parents of the year" but surely not bad at all!

As far as I recall, Mitsuhiko's parents are teachers. So no matter what, it just seem to me like the DB are just not telling about their achivments, though that would be totally out of character for them since they brag about every little thing that they Conan solves.

Lol well DB does get in trouble with their parents, especailly the first few times xD.  I guess after that they were careful to let Agasa or the police (appear) to catch the criminals.  They can just blame the fact that they're there to bad luck or something.  I think unless the crime was shown on TV their parents wouldn't know of the crime....and even if it is since they're not directly involve with the crime I'm sure their names and faces aren't shown/mentioned.

Shinichi's parents:  Left him to go travelling when he's 13.  Shinichi was probably left to Agasa...though it's more like Shinichi taking care of Agasa (cleaning his multiple cuts from explosions etc...xD).  Yuki will fly back to check on him though, since he's pretty annoyed to see them there I have a feeling they do that a lot.

Shinichi: -half awake and making toast-

Yukiko:  You should make eggs with that.

Shinichi: mmmhmm......-wakes up- Wait, what are YOU doing here?!?!

Yuusaku:  Well we were sky diving nearby and so we decided to drop in to have breakfast!  And oh haven't you solve that murder yet?  Do I need to givce you a hint?

Shinichi:  *twitch* NO.

Sonoko's parents:  Well I only saw her mom.  She seems quite a nice lady though a bit crazy and vain xD.  I'm not sure how Sonoko is with her parents but she doesn't want the servants or her parents to monitor her.  She walks around herself and when she goes out she'll want Kogoro to drive her instead of getting her (multiple) drivers.

Ran's parents:  Well she hasn't saw Eri since she was 8 years old and Kogoro has a habit of getting drunk.  But Kogoro really worries about her in his own careless way and I'm sure Ran talks on the phone with Eri occasionally (to put in a good word about Kogoro lol).  Eri avoid seeing her until Kogoro seems semi-respectable though xD.

seriously, I think some of their parents give them too much freedom, however I know they care. Shinichi in particular. Ran's parents seem to care more, though she lives with her irresponsible father. Her mother still makes sure Ran has nice clothes and the things she needs. Still, she was irresponsible for leaving the family, and leaving Ran with her father....

Shinichi's parents just left him there, saying he can fend for himself? They left him, knowing he has a tendency to run off and solve dangerous cases. That's not someone who is old enough to take care of himself. And now he had a poison forced down him, which could've killed him....yea, and his parents still let him live by himself. He's not grown yet, so I would've told him to pack his bag if I were the parents...but like I said, his parents live on the wild side.....

but all in all, yeah most DC parents suck lol, you'd expect every single character in DC to be hard-boiled, due to basically living up depending only on yourself.

I think Eri+Kogoro were good parents back when they were together, not so much anymore : /

In my opinion, these following parents are not so good at all (maybe they're not really bad, but still careless in someway...):

- Dboy's parents: WORST parents ever I have to say ! I mean, after all that troubles/murders/dangers... their kids were in (and sometimes nearly die), they still let the DBoy hang out with Agasa !!! Remember the Haunting house case when the kids went... overnight and they didn't even go out to look for them, just yelled at them the next morning... 

- Mouri Kogouro: Whenever we saw him, we also heard about drinking, gambling, horse racing and mostly, girls... He just sat there all day and let Ran did all the house work !    

- Haibara's parents: Die too soon and let their kids suffer (Sorry, I got nothing... LOL  )

- Shinichi's parents: Though they did really care about him, but I think they're too calm seeing their own son puts himself in danger...

I remember Sonoko's Dad. Try looking at the Black Star themed ones. He seems to be maybe overly happy.

Not completly true. I remember a case where Ran went to meet her mom at a coffee house. And She and Conan visited her mom at her office. Also the times Ran setup her dad and her mom.

I'm saying he wouldn't have had an option. He's not entitled to think for himself in that situation if it occurs, especially if he's young high school boy. I wouldn't have left IN THE FIRST PLACE knowing he tends to stick his nose in cases that are dangerous....and if I had to leave, I would have taken him with me from the beginning. Ran has sense enough to know he tends to follow dangerous men down dark alleyways from the beginning. His parents probably knew it too before the incident even happened...and yet, they let him live on his own.....
They care to some degree about Shinichi, but they are careless parents, letting many things go by without addressing it when it comes to Shinichi.

Well DC parents are all under this "parental rule of cool" thing...even Kogoro...occasionally...rarely.  I'm guessing giving your stupidly over confident son who laughs  whenever his face appears on TV the opportunity to make his own mistakes is a good thing to do.  Plus I have a feeling Yukiko and Yuusaku have been in tighter spots then Shinichi because of their bolder personalities.  They in turn probably worried their own parents to death and they should understand from both the perspective of a troublesome teenager and an adult.  Thing is if Shinichi gets hurt/killed the ones who will be hurt the most is his parents, however they still let him decide what he wants to do with his life instead of doing what they want (which is to stay safe). 
 
Though...lol it's interesting to note how Shinichi thinks Yukiko was worried about him during the Vermouth confrontation when in reality she was worried about Sharon.  Maybe I'm misreading it but......

Shinichi:  "Don't worry, I'll come back alive"

Yukiko: "Is it true..."

Yukiko:  "Sharon..."
