That Case with the Clocks (files 762-76X)

Post by Kor »

I'll change the title after the translation is done of course and then I'll add a poll as well.

So, for now, spoiler tags it is.
Spoiler:
Well, gotta say it's a bit refreshing that we finally see Kogoro doing his job again, since I can't really recall when was the last time a client came to him, and it wasn't just a *They stuck in a forest for whatever reason and they find a case*.
Seems like a regular 3 files case with Conan, Ran and Kogoro. But it also seems like it rushes through the scenes, though I suppose I can't judge this yet before the translation.
So final notes:
One of the dudes in this case looks like Abraham Lincoln.........though he isn't the one that gets killed
And since this case is about clocks, I'm pretty sure at the end of the case, one of the trio would give a speech to the murderer which would go something like this "What you did is bad. You've done it infront of the clocks and the clocks must hate you now because of that bad thing that you did" - of course, I hope I'm wrong......

Spoiler:
So far, I like what I see. As you said, it's refreshing that they don't just stumble upon a corpse for one but that Kogoro is actually there for business. And the setup reminds me of some of the earlier cases, e.g. tsukikage island.
We don't make mistakes. We have happy accidents.

Spoiler:
Seriously!?  People are STILL hiring Kogorou to be a bodyguard!?  Look at his track record, people!!!

Anyway at first I got all excited because it was all "going against the flow of time" blah blah blah however it turns out that the case still doesn't have anything to do with the BO  >:( Unless we get lucky and a cat pops out of somewhere/nowhere.

The formless sword is a nice touch, though.  And that's a lot of blood  :D

Chekhov Mode: On
Alright people.  Abe is suspicious because he's holding onto that folding umbrella.
Sis is suspicious because she won't go to the well.  Also possibly the mysterious carpet sample?
Old dude is suspicious because he ran into the house ahead of everyone.

One can assume that naturally the Crazy Clock Lady (CCL) killed off the previous clock technician as it was hinted that he broke and therefore was of no further use to her - but also she probably overworked him (since three people are currently doing his former job and apparently sucking at it) and that likely led to his "accident"

That butler is the most suspicious to me to be honest. But we have the 3 suspects, so maybe I am overthinking it. But this butler looks so grim and evil.

Spoiler:
I, for some reason, think it was the butler too. From the timing, it seems more likely it was a mechanism connected to the clocks that killed her and the butler had best access to the clocks without looking suspicious, although I suppose the others may have had a chance when they were in the house. I'd say it's either a planned murder (as in the butler knew when the lights would be turned off and it would normally avert suspicion from him as he wouldn't be near the body, the main problem with this idea is how a mechanism would be near her because she's stood in the centre of the room) the other option I see is (that one of the three (the old man?) took the opportunity (perhaps they blamed her for the clock-guys death) when the lights were switched off although this doesn't explain how they aimed so well in the dark or the timing). I can't think of the motive if it's the butler though... ??? , maybe money? the woman definitely has a lot of it, I don't know  :(  Most of it is probably wrong anyway, so... to sum it up I think first choice = butler, second choice = old man.
And also it looks like Kogoros sorta suspicious of Conan!!  ;D ...I wonder why ::)

I seem to be obsessed with brackets today  :D

XD I'd forgotten all about the butler

THE BUTLER DID IT!  :D :D :D :D :D

Btw, I forgot:  I bet there was some sort of glow-in-the-dark message on the cake!  That's why the CCL was taken aback after she blew out the candles.

Spoiler:
Speaking of time, I remember a phrase: We Can Be Both of God and the Devil. Since We're Trying To Raise The Dead Against The Stream Of Time" and Ai-chan words "Human can never go against the stream of time. If a man forcibly tries to change that, you'll be punishment". I wonder Conan think of that again during a case.

I also thought the foldable umbrella was suspicious. The carpet sample seems like something Conan is going to use to make a point. And I suspect the giant clock hands will come into play at some point along with the clock facing the back yard.

file's out so no spoiler tags for me :V

Anyway, I think the butler did it, aside from him just being sketchy to me he's the only one who's received the brunt of her anger so far here, so perhaps both he and the original technician were subjected to that together and he ended up seeing her kill the guy.

Also, he was able to find the light switch in the dark pretty quickly which makes me wonder how he didn't see the attacker when he was already at the cake.

Could also be the old clockmaker though because he has the most reliable clock and may very well have been coming on her birthday to make sure its timing was right for the trick. What the trick is, I'm not sure yet but it probably involves a clock. :P

It seems to me that the reason she was so surprised after blowing out the candles was because her watch was faster than all the other clocks. She probably wanted to blow out the candles at exactly 6, but realized something was wrong when the clocks weren't chiming. (BTW: if this is true, there is a high probability she tried to look at her watch after blowing out the candles).

Added a poll. Will put my thoughts later.

EDIT:
OK, I know it's basically cheating to do it this way, but we don't have much clues yet to figure it out, so let's review the characters in terms of Gosho's usual writing.

Oume: Out of the four, he is the only one without a real motive. So especially because of that, we can't rule him out. However, he wasn't near the body like the other three.

Karube: The umbrella, obviously. The problem here that if the umbrella is the "tiny hint" from the start of the case which only later seems rellavent, is that it wasn't so tiny. The first thing I thought when I read the case was that it might be a weapon. Then again, if it was a hidden weapon, he couldn't put it back in his pocket because then it would be bloody. He could have opened the window and throw it out, but then if someone looks out the window, he might find it. With him, we have the "he was my childhood friend" so called motive.

Suou: She's the one with the strongest motive to do that, which is it's hard to believe that Gosho would make her be the killer

Furukagi: He seems to me like a major suspect, because he seems like the dude to kill over a clock. We've seen such things from Gosho, so I wouldn't be surprised if he would kill over that. Then again, the victim loved the clocks and took care of them pretty good, so I don't see a "she didn't take care of the clocks well, so I killed her" motive happening here. He also couldn't have killed her over the silver clock cause he just found out about it moments before the victim died. But again, he also had relations with Suou's brother, so........

For now, I'll stick the the swiss craftsman............who is also the BO's boss  ;D

Spoiler:
i think its the clock technician..
because if you look at it that way..
when he passed by when they were talking
he was wearing a hood and we didn't see him from then..
but all of them are suspicious

Miniature clock gun, enough said.  ;)

In all seriousness, Karube was the only one to handle CCL's new pocket-watch and could have written something dastardly on it. When CCL blew out the candles the golden watch her near her face, she could have noticed the writing. As for the fantastic pool of blood, when CCL is transfixed, Karube pulls out the folding umbrella, which has a knife inside, stabs her, and then replaces the knife in the umbrella in such a way the blood pools into the water resistant plastic.
The window is something I can't quite explain yet. A string or something else may have opened the window and attached to the cake cart. when CCL fell she dislodged the wedge and the window thus opened.
It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important.

I don't know if I should be surprised nobody has come up with a scenario similar to what's to follow, or if I'm just over-imaginative.

Kogoro: Nobody touch her! Someone call the police!
Conan: *starts looking around for first hints*
Mystery person: Time of death, 6 hours, 0.56 seconds.
Trio: *gasps*
Conan: Hakuba-niisan!
Hakuba: Oh, you're that kid.
Ran: I remember you! You're one of the detectives from the Golden Mansion case, right? What're you doing here?
Hakuba: Me? I'm a guest here. The person that was killed...she was my-
Conan: Your auntie, right?
Hakuba: ...Yes, how did you know?
Conan: *coughobsessionwithtimecough* >__>

...or, that's just me hoping a little too much XD

As for the culprit, I think it was....
...the butler, and he did it with a toothbrush ;D
