I've been watching since I was 8-9 and I live in the US. It was at the library and it was a mandarin dub. I fell in love with the mysteries and how I could guess correctly how the murders occurred.

I'd say it's a gentle balancing act. If you're too young, you likely won't even absorb most of it and may not even understand the deduction. Either of those two things would greatly depreciate the value of the series. If you were to watch it when you're too old, per se, unless you have a lot of free time and like anime, there's no way you'd be able to appreciate it fully or think of it as anything but childish or an attempt to scale up to Law and Order, C.S.I., NYPD Blue, Nash Bridges, etc. So it just depends. I'd say if you were watching it alone, just anywhere from an intelligent 10 year old to a 30 year old devoted fan. However, if watching it with a family, I'm sure everyone could enjoy it and get their separate laughs and joy out of it. Ideally, I watch it alone, but you could, in theory, watch it with your family if you could get everyone available to watch them often. So after that long rant, I say, "It's best suited for teenagers because it centers around Shinichi, his odd predicament, his detective work, and his love, Ran." I think it's made for older high school boys and girls.

Re: What would be the right age to watch Detective Conan?
This is such a long running series. I was 12 when it started, so I think I should still be in the target audience because there are people my age who have watched it since it started. As for too young, I think this series has changed and matured since it's first year. I think the first episode/story is graphic but resembles the violence found in a teenage focused slasher film more than the utilitarian violence displayed on 24. The later episodes begin to show the latter (Akai, anyone?). If I had to do childhood over again, I would want to watch this series instead of other, more child focused material. I wouldn't experience the disappointment of young adulthood when you rediscover these shows only to be faced with disappointment. If you enjoy Conan now, just wait until you've gone through your history and science classes (oh, and if offered take Japanese!) of secondary school and college. You'll love watching them again, even more than the first time! The second time, the series may even have been fully subbed and completed.

Re: What would be the right age to watch Detective Conan?
I started watching Conan at age 6, when I heard about it from my elementary schools friends. It was very popular in China at the time (and still is). I'm almost 16 now, sooooo. I was a very mature child >_<. But now that I watch/read it again I realize that I actually understood a lot for a kid but didn't get everything.
(I also watched some violent Chinese war dramas with my parents as an 8 year old, so that's most likely why I turned out to be scared of NOTHING =_=)
But should? Most likely a 10+.

Re: What would be the right age to watch Detective Conan?
I first read DC when I was in 3rd grade. To tell the truth, at such a young age, I was so scared of the bloody crime scenes that I didn't dare to sit alone in the dark.
When I re-read it at the time I was 13, I didn't find anything scary anymore.
Six years ago, I'd heard that a 9-year-old boy in Taiwan (or Hong Kong, I don't remember exactly) killed his grandmother in simulation of a crime scene in DC...
DC is a detective series that may paint a picture so vivid in young readers' minds that make them obsessed with it.
Therefore, I don't think DC is suitable for readers younger than 13.

Re: What would be the right age to watch Detective Conan?
it's probably difficult to figure out who the culprit is becuase the key clue is usually hidden until he makes his showhaibara_ai wrote: To get license to watch, age 12+ (my guess)
To understand, age 15+
To challenge Conan/Shinichi, age 20+ (may be)
I myself is 18 yrs. and I find it difficult to always find the complete reasoning. Although occassionally I catch the culprit.

Re: What would be the right age to watch Detective Conan?
I think everybody has a right age to start watching/reading Conan, but what's more important, in my opinion, is to have many people hooked up with the series. It's OK as long as you understand this is a fiction series. Of course, children must be protected and sure they won't understand most of the crimes, and surely people from different places of the world can be really different in their thoughts, but I think it should be suitable for children, though it's necessary to have a mature person near to explain what's going on.
To sum up, it's all about if you can handle your children to watch anime. It doesn't mind if it's Pokémon, Detective Conan or Dragon Ball, I mean, there is a right message for children in all of them. Just don't let your children watch Blade of the Immortal and seinen... If it's with their parents, I think every age is suited. If not, like mostly everyone said, 10-13 is the right age to start watching it on your own, although you won't understand it all unless you're 15-16.

Re: What would be the right age to watch Detective Conan?
Well, I started watching when I was fourteen but that's because of being introduced to it kind of late. I really was wishing I had started at least two or three years before that. I think anyone 10+ would be able to absorb most of what is going on.
To be on par with the reasoning... I'm sure if you're used to mystery 14+ is fine because there have been quite a few cases I was able to solve pretty easily. If you're not so used to mystery, then I don't know... sixteen or seventeen?
When it comes to the Black Organization and Shinichi's bouts with them, well it gets a little complex; but I really do believe Detective Conan is for most age groups. I say minimum eight years of age, though. Any younger than that, best luck is with the Shonen Tantei-dan's episodes
For younger audiences, yeah, like fer5 said, maybe an adult/elder audience to explain might be good. So as long as the knives and flower pots and poisons don't throw ideas into little kids' heads, of course xD

There is some mature language in DCTP fansubs. For instance, in episode 263 "Osaka Double Mystery", the translator uses the f-word twice. However, that is just how DCTP translated it, and this is the only episode in which they use that word in their subs. Language use differs among fansub groups. All original DC content is suitable for TV broadcast.

Re: What would be the right age to watch Detective Conan?
*cough* >< I'M under 13.
The idea that most people get is WRONG. Kids from like 3-5 might not even understand what the hell is going on in there. 6+ would, for sure. And for the 'suitableness'... Well, I think DC's the 'best censored' anime I've known of. Such as in ep 1, there's a whole lotta blood spewing from the poor guy's head (or where it was supposed to be lol). They replaced it with rays of light.... weird, sure, but it works.
Not-so-censored anime? Take Karas. EEEEWWWW! *turns off TV* SPIDERS EATING PEOPLE AND SUCKING THE LIFE OUTTA THEM UNTIL THEY BECOME DRY CORPSES EEEEEEWWWWW!!!!!!!

Hmmm... 2004... that's when I was 14.... (but it's beause I have never known any Japanese type of entertainment at all until 2004)
but the appropriate age would probably be some where from 9 up? since you'll need to understand the reasoning and all ^_^
