This is weak solution.
Spoiler:
She has time to send a message to Conan and maybe the Police, But they do not notice a open cell phone until it too late. Would have been nice if Hairaba had not let down her guard and check to make sure their meeting was really not being listen to. Gosho uses a weak plot point to make it necessary for them to be rescued. Was right about what the message was. See here
sstimson wrote: Any way the Code is the thing. Maybe Conan will explain later what he hear that lead him to say call police.

Anyway I sure the message must say something like "help. Mom being held hostage"

And remember all the face stuff and such did not stop Db from enter the apartment.

Either the Db will leave there then call the police, or ask their Dad Takagi to pick them up.

The real question is how to get the bad guys arrested without getting the hostage killed.
Is that a sign of a weak case is if you can figure out what the message must be without decoding the code?

It must be a weak series if you can figure out that Conan/Shinichi's going to take the BO down in the end without actually having read or watched all the episodes.

One note re: "accurate translation"

I used the term "SMS" to describe the phone-based email Haibara sent Conan, however this was but a shortcut used for clarity purposes in order to not write "mail" multiple times in the same speech bubble when the subject was "registered mail"

SMS is not actually widely used in Japan - everyone uses "mail" - email tied to their cell phone service provider

sms - not sure what the letters stand for. If it were me, I would call a text message.

Right - and that's exactly NOT what they were sending

Maybe we should just change it back to "email"...

This is the hard part in the translation process -- we have to choose between fidelity and familiarity.
I myself prefer "text message" or "hot spring inn" in place of "Short Message Service" or "onsen ryokan", even though the latter is more semantically accurate.
But that's just different beliefs between translators, and as long as a translation conveys the original meaning, it will be considered an outstanding work such as this file. <3

Right - Americans are still new to the concept of reading and sending email on phones compared to the Japanese :D

People need to be reminded that she can also solve things, and not just think up new and interesting ways to off herself.

Well ya, but back then we also knew much less and it also put the idea in our heads that she might be into similar thing... then those were dashed :P.

Though I think "just think up of new and interesting ways to off herself." is a bit much. People really underestimate how well she's done for herself emotionally. Besides, you said it yourself it was "interesting ways" :P.
