Second, the first 120 episodes didn´t had that much of a plot developpement, it just shows how he lives as a kid, get friends like the DBs and Heiji and almost no BO guys. Episode 129 with Ai as a member and traitor to the BO was the first "real" plot twist regarding the BO-red-string.
Third, i believe that Ran and her/his love is ONE of his motivations, but his great motivation is his desire for justice and the truth. If Ran would be his great, first and only motivation, he wouldn´t have left her alone in the restaurant to go solving a case and he wouldn´t lie to her countless times by now.
