it's a bit off topic no? moreover i already saw this debate some pages before

i just want to say that Ran IS the main girl character and she IS important to the story!yes she isn't very involved to the BO plot(for now ) but we can't say she isn't important for the story(i will not repeat what some people said,i'm too lazy for that )
maybe she isn't a very interesting character(for me) but it doesn't mean she isn't important!

anyway,we can't know if the story would be better/worse if Ran wasn't here,or if  it would change DC alot!we are not gosho for creating DC! so maybe we can imagine the story,but still,it's gosho's manga,he can do what he want with it!

Because it is a Detective Story Ran and Shinchi's supposed romance doesn't fit the mood of the Detective Story. Ai and Shinchi's relationship is mysterious as well as interesting. So yeah, because it is Detective Conan and not some dumb "Peach Girl" show, Ran needs to step down or needs a character enhancement. Its like I always say, I don't care for romance, but if I'm going to have to sit through one it better be a darn good one. Old school romances were never really thought out romances, but still the stuff back then did show some kind of connection and growing bond between lovers. Ran and Shinchi is kinda shoved in there. While I respect Goshyo as a writer, I just think that that character is my least favorite from his writing. Just because I like DC doesn't mean I have to like everything about just cause its DC. It has its really good points....but Ran is just a let down.

if a char is not related to the BO does not mean she could not be a main char
the feeling vermouth has for ran can be used later on in the story. thats why gosho emphasized her guilt towards people who saved her life.anyone could have created apotoxin. gosho could have just said developed by the BO done.
ran being important to shinichi makes ran important to the storyline.not having ran would change DC a lot.

without ai conan would still have met the BO in later chapters most of this happened by coincidence right?
furthermore we still have jodie and akai and kir conan would still have connections.ai may be important but she appears less frequently compared to ran in the DC series.yeah gosho could have made a new buddy for kazuha and sonoko but kazuha and sonoko appear usually with ran. in kazuhas case she appears along with heji then conan and heji meet brining the girls together.but if gosho were to make a different girl for these two how would they be related to conan? ran is sonokos school buddy and kazuha and ran meet because heji and conan meet. but if ran were a different girl not being shinichis gf/someone living with him how could gosho replace that? yes ran could just become a best friend but passing by or meeting up with conan always?or if she did with kogoro being his daughter it wouldnt really sound so great.conan would be better of living with agasa.

ran is not pointless she is very important to the storyline maybe not really important in the BO plot but the vermouth guilt towards ran is obviously something gosho would use later on in the story. sooner or later hopefully in the last chaps of DC ran would be part in a way.and hopefully kogoro will finally win a horse race

Ai is part of the BO. Shinchi would have met Ai sooner or later especially when he needed the drug to make it.  Ran is not even important to the main story line. All she does is whine and call his name. She's there to stand there and look pretty. And the fact that Ran does appear more than Ai is stupid because Ai has a way more important role than Ran. All those episodes with Ran and she hasn't evolved into anything. All she does in every episode is cry and call Shinchi' name. What good is that? When Ai appears things get interesting....always....she should definitely take the heroine role and is well on her way of doing so.

Even if Ran is in the story, she shouldn't even be considered as an heroine of the story. Ran is going to be used....but so will Sonoko, Kogoro...the DBoys...that doesn't make them important characters. Vermouth's guilt will not make Ran important. Its really not so obvious that Ran will play a bigger role than the role she's playing now. Sonoko, Kazuya, and Ran could have still been friends, but Ran should still not be considered a heroine if she barely does anything to change the main character which is the point of her role.
Goshyo could replace the romance with Ai. A bunch of girls liked Shinchi as evident in the beginning. Ai could be that one girl who gets to know the true him thats not a show off and know it all. At first, they don't trust one another but soon grow to get to know and understand one another and soon fall in love unintentionally. (Beauty and the Beast).


(Quite Frankly, I think he is better off living with Agasa, but thats my personal preference.....

Well, every character is important in the story if you put it that way. But she is not important ENOUGH to be a main girl character. She is important, but not ENOUGH importance. Being Shinichi's love interest doesn't fly as important.

Yes Ai could've been labeled "Black Organization made APTX" but that would be unrealistic, yes? If there is a top-notch organization, with criminals the specialize in things like computer programming, assasination tactics, and science, the person who made the drug would be a more specific person....There are many different types of members who specialize in many things. But someone made APTX, that's for certain, and eventually that person would have to be revealed eventually, whether the label is "BO" or not, someone is going to have to supply the antidote. And someone made it, thus beginning the story.

Ran doesn't have a very important role in all of this. It seems they try too hard to make her an asset to the story, but she's really just a love interest. It is do to the role she was placed in. Shinichi is trying to keep her out of the BO mess and crime-filled world, but for the story, it is making her character less and less important.

Okay, Ran made Vermouth like her. So what? Shinichi's mom could've done that. Really, it doesn't matter who likes who. That is not going to stop the "BO HUNT." Really, what does Ran do in all of those cases she's on but stand there? She only talks about Shinichi when she is recognized, and occasionally she gets to solve "bogus" cases, that tries give her importance. It's like Goshyo is trying to make her important with those feeble cases (Convenience store, etc), but really, that type of case could've been designed for the Detective Boys and still have the same effect.

Regardless of Ran's importance, she is also not a very well-developed character, as I've already mentioned, considering her Supposed "status" in DC (Main girl character). Her character is a bit bland compared to other characters. So she becomes my least favorite character.....I don't particularly hate her around Shinichi, but because she's kind of in the way of important scenes, she becomes a bit of an annoyance.

Because DC isn't surrounded by romance, that makes her role all the more useless, yes, as someone just said, it really makes her character static.....The story is surrounded around cases and the BO, which Ran, Sonoko, and Kahzuya really don't have much to contribute to. It's the sad truth of it all.

Being Shinichi's favorite girl is great and all, but the story is not a love story about two childhood friends who love each other and find it hard to tell each other.. That is A PART of the story, but a very SMALL part of it. It's about a crime syndicate shoving a pill down his throat causing him to shrink. Ran used to be useful when he needed to stay with the Mouris to go through cases to track down the BO. With the addition of Ai, he doesn't really need the Mouris at all, and he doesn't need to stay with them either. So, Ran is a bit static....it doesn't make her a bad one, just not very important in the DC world of cases and criminals.

yea, in my own corner, I like to analyze characters, and how important to the story they are. It helps me find meaning in the story. I also find inspiration in well-developed characters in my own stories, so I often find myself pointing out when one character lacks the depth another character has. It makes me wonder about Goshyo as a writer and his thinking (especially regarding women, since he's a man).

Also, gomen nesai, I'm long-winded!  I am a stereotypical Taurus like Shinichi, who likes to explain the whys and wherefores of everything to get my point across....I'm annoying in that way. Excuse me...I decipher the important details from the unimportant details. 

But back to AixConan....does anyone else wonder if Conan thinks Haibara's family is interesting and full of drama? I mean, his life is so perfect, with two famous parents, he lives on his own in his big mansion, well as Shinichi...and then Ai has a pretty messed up life, with parents who were all regarded as being "dark, mysterious, gloomy, suspicious, and mad..."I bet he looks at Ai's family and goes "wtf?" And he is an only child. Ai had a sister, who outshined her in everything really...well, it appears that way to me. Akemi had a normal life. What prevented Ai from having that type of life?.....Conan doesn't know what hardship means. This was the hardest thing he ever went through, and he kind of brought it on himself for being so curious....

You lost me here. Nothing points to Akemi being superior to Shiho but a lot points to Shiho being superior to Akemi. Reason why Akemi was allowed to live a normal life was because of Shiho. It seemed like Akemi was of little use to the Organization but instead of disposing of her, they kept her alive under watch because a dead Akemi would result in an uncooperative Shiho(like now), which would mean losing an extremely valuable "asset".

Akemi did have a more vivid personality than Shiho but you have remember that Akemi was actually raised by her parents, Shiho wasn't as they "died" shortly after her birth. Only the cold B.O. was left to raise Shiho. As for Conan researching Shiho's parents, it would only be for B.O. purposes, nothing related to Shiho as Conan has never been the noisy type(excluding Ran) or the type to find a reason to pity others.
..And though he doesn't show it, Shinichi is living a life where his parents left him to raise himself. So it's really not a perfect life for him.

Hey i do that too. I love rereading DC-volumes and thinking about what Gosho wants to say with his charas, their actions and the cases and such things. I also thinks about the charas themself and their developpement.^^
Causes of his lately focus on cases with broken relationsships between lovers and friends, i guess that there wil be a "event" in the relationships between RanxShinichi/ConanxShiho/Ai. Who really knows, maybe i´m wrong.

I´m sure i already mentioned it somewhere in this thread but i´m sure that Shinichis life wasn´t easy at all too.
Being left behind by his parents and being supported by Agasa and Ran wasn´t all that great, every child wants to have their parents nearly. In Shinichis case he begins to avoid his parents and being rude them them whenever they appear. Something he earned by living alone, all alone in this huge house.

And then their is the question about his "jerk" self back then at vol 1, his "friends" at school who didn´t care to call him on his phone or said to Ran that he will be back after solving his case like always and so on.
Hopefully we´ll see in the future a "vulnerable" Shinichi/Conan, someone who needs also protection but not in a physical way. It´s hard to be always the hero who tries to save everyone.

not really gosho could have just said that the BO came up with APTX i mean thats how it was like for the first 120+ episodes it didnt really sound suspicious odd in any way?and the vermouth - ran connection all im saying is gosho obviously will use it on later chapters vermouths guilt will be very important at the end of the DC series it may not be very important but it is still important.
