Honestly I never even thought about him taking his exams in the story. I just figured the manga would end with some kind of typical confession/ retransformation /Shinichi kisses his girl (whoever it ends up being) and they walk happily into the sunset. I don't like that kind of ending, it would be nice to have a bittersweet ending, but it's what I always figured would happen.

Realistically, all Shinichi has to do is pass his end of year exams, which he probably could anyway since he's so smart, and, as I pointed out before, in Japan, you can't just "skip grades".  I don't think it's done over there.  Anywho, even though he's missing a lot of school, it probably won't matter to much.  As far as I know, attendance isn't really a big factor, unless one is out for like medical reasons or something.

Shinichi's practically given in his seat as a detective anyways, with the whole "savior of the Japanese police force" dealy at the beginning.

That's dated June 1998... we really need something dated this millennium to be sure things haven't changed. He could go to university in Japan without completing his senior year {of high school}, if he completes his junior year, according to this {link} (assuming that's not out of date). (I guess that means that if he manages to flunk out then he'd need to go outside of Japan for a college education... anyway, avoiding this question is probably one of the reasons Aoyama is not letting more than a year pass in story time.)

I doubt Shinichi will flunk out.  The requirement for college/university there is a high school diploma and being able to pass the entrance exam.
