Top 10 favorite video games
ORIGINAL TOPICS! ;D
for me,
1. Metroid Prime: Nothing like any game I played before (first Metroid game), it had the best graphics, most atmospheric music, most brilliant gameplay and the coolest controls (I'm sure I'm in the minority for this one though). And only my opinion of the graphics changed (Resident Evil 4 for GCN, many games for next gen consoles) The way it told a story almost entirely through scanning messages and other things was so unexpected and cool.
2. Mother 3: Wow, I never thought a story could be so sad, yet have me smiling throughout the entire game just because of how good it is. (or maybe the smiling means I'm a terrible person) Anyway, I refuse to describe Mother 3. It's the only game that I believe goes beyond being a game and can be classifed as "art". Yet somehow, I still prefer Metroid Prime.
3. Super Mario Galaxy: Paper Mario should be here, but this and Mother 3 are the only recent games where I've smiled throughout, basically, every single part of the game. Don't need to explain much here. It was Super Mario 64 handled even better, both because of new ideas and new technology. Also, it might have the greatest soundtrack EVER.
4. Paper Mario: This is the MARIO RPG. Not the Mario RPG where outside of jumping and the battle system, it's Mario characters in an RPG (as good as they usually are). This game felt like a tribute to my favorite series ever. It is also used as proof by me often that as I've said before "simple stories are generally the most fun".
5. The Orange Box: Let's see...the 2004 game of the year, Half Life 2, and it's two episodic sequels that feel exactly like 2 thirds of what the sequel should be (and is). Also, the most innovative and hilarious first person game perhaps ever (no doubt on the hilarious part honestly). And an awesome multiplayer shooter with silly characters and lines that have reached Haruhi Suzumiya levels of internet fame. They even have their own DEVELOPER'S COMMENTARY. In the gameplay itself.
6. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island: Everyone has already played Yoshi's Island right? Good.
7. Banjo Kazooie: Everything in this game was done perfectly. Brilliant level design (as expected from 90s Rareware), beautiful music that felt silly yet fit so perfectly and the fact that I can remember pretty much everything you have to do in this game and what almost all of the level looks like (even smaller rooms, like a personal favorite, Rusty Bucket Bay's kitchen).
8. Star Fox 64: Everything from this game is quoteable. That combined with the insane replayability of the game alone makes it one of the best games.
9. Kirby's Adventure: The classic Kirby game, considered the Super Mario Bros. to Dreamland's Donkey Kong. Also, UFO Kirby. :DDDDDDD
10. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: I'm not sure why I think this is the best Zelda game. Probably for being the most epic and for being what OOT was for me as a child when it comes to being able to find new things just because of exploring without the exploration getting too ridiculous.
Honorable mentions: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening, Wind Waker, Super Paper Mario, Super Mario 64, Viewtiful Joe, Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2, Super Mario Bros. DX, Super Mario Bros. 3, Pokemon Silver/Gold, Golden Sun, Megaman 3, Megaman Legends, Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Chrono Trigger, World of Goo, Matio Kart DS, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Cave Story, the PS1 Crash games, Warioware, Animal Crossing, Klonoa, etc.

Re: Top 10 favorite video games
1. Legend of Zelda- A Link To The Past: Still one of my favorite Zelda games of all time. 2D Zelda is ftw.
2. Orange Box: I was a rabid TF2 player (it's like crack cocaine!) I had to curb off a bit when I started classes. And to the rest of the Orange Box there is no question that Valve is one of the best when it comes to story telling and pacing.
3. Chrono Series: I'm one of those rabid fans people who hacked the pre-release of CT, listens to remixes, read articles about it, and hates FF series for being in the way.
4. Okami: Beautiful. Just beautiful.
5. Final Fantasy Tactics: One of my favorite strategy games of all time :].
6. Megaman series: I grew up on this stuff.
7. Super Robot Wars series: I also grew up on this stuff.
8. Street fighter series: and I played WAYYYY too much of this stuff as I was growing up.
9. Touhou series: Not the best Bullet Hell shooter I know. But will be the most memorable because of the cult following : D.
10. DotA: What's there to explain?

Re: Top 10 favorite video games
It's very generic compared to the other games. Would probably be much less generic if it wasn't impossible to not compare to the far superior Majora's Mask.Penguinfan wrote: How can you like Legend of Zelda and not like OoT....thats like blasphemy
Also, it was only praised as much as it was because it was 1998 and because it was the first 3D title like that that gained popularity. (So it's the video game equivalent of Dragonball Z's dub).

Re: Top 10 favorite video games
I can see your point, I'll always love it as it is one of the games that got me into rpg's. I'll always remember the morning I got the the mirror shield....good times haha. Back on topic though yes looking back it might it might not seem as great as it does now, but as you said it was 1998. I think it comes down to what you think makes a game great ie. Re playability, storyline, fun, ect. For me I see it as the best Zelda game because for the time it was great in all the said categories but more importantly because of the way it revolutionized gaming. This in my mind is what makes a game great. Sorry if all that kinda rambles together and makes no since

Re: Top 10 favorite video games
almost 100 percent sure that you were a kid when played OOT and thought it was the best ever. You thought everything was awesome and couldn't see the flaws in a lot of things when you were a kid.Penguinfan wrote: I can see your point, I'll always love it as it is one of the games that got me into rpg's. That mean it's little more than Nostalgia Goggles. Nostalgia Goggles are not an opinion. They ARE however a great way to eventually make you an angry old man who misses the "good old days".
also, kirite, tell your fellow Touhou fans that they are annoying as f*ck and need to stop justifying the people who call anime fans weeaboos. Thank you.

Re: Top 10 favorite video games
Don't make fun of the good old days
. It's the basis of how it revolutionized future games that I would include it as my top games of all time. I might be a little off topic though so here's a question. Would you say your favorite games of all time would also be considered what you believe to be the top games of all time? In my mind these are different in some ways such as that I would not include the way a game affected future games into account in making a list for my favorite games but would if making a list of what I believed to be the top games of all time. So after sorting through all this I did my initial list completely wrong lol.

Re: Top 10 favorite video games
My favorite games are the ones I most enjoyed playing in the past 3-5 years. I play all of my games I used to think were my favorite games and play them again to see if they still are (for example, Wind Waker hasn't aged well, especially compared to other Zelda games).
I still really like OOT but compared to other Zelda games it just feels kind of bland (outside of the temples that aren't Fire which are still awesome). I have the same blandness problem with Phantom Hourglass (although the music certainly didn't help).

Re: Top 10 favorite video games
Then I agree with you that if I was to go back and play OoT I would not enjoy it nearly as much as if I was to go and play a different game say Gears of War as an example. Although I might enjoy Gears of War now I would still put OoT ahead of it when talking about the top games of all time. Anyway I'm sure I'm only making a little since if any since it's 3:30 in the morning so im going to get some sleep before work in the morning.
