Disturbing thing I found out today from a friend who got a job at the airport; all the desk staff are IMing each other, all the time, at least in UK airports. If you're unpleasant to the desk staff when checking in, they will confer to put you next to the noisiest child or fattest man on the aeroplane. Also, they will tell teh security guys to pick on you for random searches.

So be nice to your check-in staff, she says, because they also pick polite and friendly passengers for upgrades if First or Business aren't full.
