i agree with bluekaitou... that's why there's still no winner... conan solves kaito's tricks, but he isn't able to catch him...

Yusaku, I think is the best detective.
Conan, Hakuba, and Heiji are almost of equal caliber detectives. (Conan being #1, and Hakuba and Heiji would be a tie for a close #2)
I think Shinichi and Kaito are on the same level.
I also think Akai and Conan are pretty close.
Gin is smart, but Conan and Akai can definitely outsmart him. Although Conan was a bit careless in that episode where he had to hide in the locker.
Haibara is science smart, but she's not observant enough to have Conan's detective skill. She might be more competent than Kogoro, though.

Then about Conan's failure to capture Kaito:
Kaito cheats with using illusions. Conan gathers information through observation. So, if Conan doesn't have the information, his smartness is of no use. I think Kaito is merely exploting this weakness, that is, he is witholding information that Conan needs. That is, if his strings were perfectly visible, he would lose.

My opinions:

Yuusaku may be the best, but i think he'll be just as smart as Shin'ichi if he's the same age (experience helps).
The same with Akai.
Of course Haibara is better than Kogoro. I'd say Haibara can be observant if she wants to, but I think she'd rather not stick her nose out of things, kinda like what Conan does.
Well, every character has their ups and downs.

But I agree with you about Conan's failure to capture Kaito.

aw man i really think it's between Shinichi and Kaito... whenever it's a Conan vs Kid case I root for Conan of course, but they're always quite evenly matched, and when i think about it do I really want Kid to be caught...?? Nooo!!

I like that Conan always foils Kid's plans and yet Kid always manages to escape from Conan's grasps....!

although I would say yuusaku is probably the right answer, I feel inclined to say shinichi, as we've really seen very little of yuusaku's thought process, he just magically seems to know everything.

other than that, kid may be a close second/third, however I'd say he's more clever than smart. Although they're very similar, I don't know if Kid would be able to do deductions as well as shinichi, he's more specialized in doing unexpected things, as after all conan manages to find kid whenever he does a plan a second time, he only ever really gets away by being unpredictable.

Well, that's my mindset before I read Magic Kaito. That Shin'ichi is better in deductions than Kid.
