But it is true that Shinichi changed when he turned to Conan. He became aware of others and learned to care for them. Where when he was Shinichi, he was full of himself. Being Conan made him realize that there are more to his life than just himself
I think the 'proving shinichi is a jerk' is just proving conan is better by induction.
Conan's definitely the best. I hate Shinichi, well not literally, but I hate his attitude. He's like a total different person, way too different from Conan in my opinion. As someone said, he acts like an over-confident rich bastard, it's like he totally forgets about his Conan-attitude.
In short - when I watch Shinichi, I feel like he's a whole different person.
So I vote for Conan, he's so cute, how can I resist him?

I like Conan better because he is a more unique character. I like Shinichi a lot too though. Of course he likes to show off, he is a teenager.
As for being "too good" at things, many of the characters fit that. Heiji rivals Shinichi at being a detective, and is also a master class at Kendo. Shinichi gave up soccer to concentrate on being a detective, but Heiji has time for both (Kendo in his case). I get the feeling Shinichi spent more time researching and improving his detective skills. Kid is another teenage super genius with overall skills possibly higher than Shinichi. Ran is a karate champion. Haibara is a young scientific genius beyond what real scientists can do. Then you have Yusaku who always puts Shinichi in his place.
Which is "too good", someone who happily accepts help from a scientist friend because they aren't strong enough on their own, or someone who can take on 50 armed men with pure skill and strength.
I think we've only really seen the (over) confident Shinichi and the sad Shinichi, and the one where his face is literally melting. They've shown far more dimensions of the character, from what I've seen at least, as Conan, rather than Shinichi.
He's got a bit of an impish streak on both sides, but as Shinichi its kind of a snobbishness, and arrogance (or maybe just confidence). As Conan, he seems to be less secure at times, and I think that softens his character. But he might have that as Shinichi as well, as we simply don't see that much of him...

Well...who do I like better? I don't really know. I like both, because actually they are the same person, aren't they? Even if they sometimes seem to be different. But I guess I'll choose Shinichi, cause he doesn't appear that often in the manga. Rare isn't always good, but it makes me look forward to the cases which include Shinichi

Shinichi can not kick ass... In fact he is probably the only crime fighting character who can't (though for Hakuba I can't really say). The police are all required to know how to take down a criminal, especially Sato.... What does Shinichi do? He kicks a ball... He kicks a damned ball. I mean... come on... Can't he have Ran teach him some basic karate? Or hyping take some hand to hand combat lessons? Kogoro has Judo, Heiji has Kendo, Ran has Karate, Kazuha has Aikido, Shinichi has soccer.... See a problem there? He should be learning now! If he truely wants to be like Holmes he should be learning how to box at least, or learn the art of Bartitsu (which I believe SACD mispelled as Baritsu if I recall correctly). Holmes was a seasoned boxer, and a damned good fighter, but Shinichi is not... He needs other people to fight for him... or he needs a spherical object to kick at the person (very inconvenient if there happens to be nothing of the sort in his proximity if you ask me)...

However he can disarm a psycho of his gun with a kick... so I just assumed he's used to doing that sort of thing. It's hillarious how everyone knows a type of martial art except Shinichi (and maybe Hakuba). Eri knows a Judo throw...and she's scary just being herself xD.
