How come my laptop can't do it?

Because your laptop likely doesn't have a separate keypad

on laptops, you generally have a "fn" key in the lower-left, which if you hold down, lets you use other specified keys as a numpad. So, you'd have to hold alt+fn and then hit those numbers on the numpad-like keys.

I simply use ´ and e, é á ó ý í, works every time

iirc, you have to have a certain keyboard setting enabled to do that. Heck, ´ isn't even actually a key on my keyboard, just ` and '.

There's more than one keyboard layout in Europe, with almost every language having its own set of special characters. Typing Ä›, Å¡, Ä

Looks normal to me.
alt+a gives you å on my mac; the mac keyboard layout seems to include far more shortcuts than the windows one. Like ç, ñ, ÿ, œ, æ... If I want to use those on a windows keyboard, I have to switch to the layout of their respective language.
(I had to copy this to my clipboard, so no OT here)

It was the font, I am used to Times New Roman Å å The thing that looked sp strange is that the å's circle was so big and so high up.
