Harley Hartwell

Post by Hydok »

Not Hattori Heiji. Harley Hartwell.

Yeah. His accent.

I read someplace that it was Canadian, but I haven't been able to find an example of his dubbed voice anywhere...

Anybody got a link to a clip or a comment on the existence of said accent?

Heck. I'll put up with the name if I can hear him with that wonderful accent of Canada...

Canadian Heji:
"So, the murderer put the weapon in the beg and wrapped it in the fleg, eh?"

A Bawstin accent would be good too, but I'm surrounded by Southan accents all the time, so that wouldn't make me happy.

*is debating whether she wants to buy the DVDs or not*
So Haibara's "radar" goes off at odd times, right? And she thinks that it is linked to the Black Org, right?
But all of the times it's gone off, there have been FBI (or suspected FBI) members there...
So, it's an FBI radar.

Second voice (first being Conan's).  He doesn't sound steriotypically Canadian at all.  It's just kind of implied in one of the episodes.  It's been a long time since I watched those early episodes, let alone the dub of those episodes, so I don't recall the episode but it was probably the first episode he was in.

That was... really lame.

Come on people! If you're gonna butcher the names, at least keep the characters in character!
How are people going to mock his accent if he doesn't have one!?

*is disappointed*

I went on a summer mission trip with a bunch of Canadians, and we kept getting them to say "there's a flag in my bag", which of course came out "there's a fleg in my beg".

And then we counted the amount of times that they said "eh?". And they didn't even realize how much they used it...

It would be totally funny in Case Closed.

Harley: The murderer is you, eh?

*becomes melancholy*

the voice actor was probably too lazy to use an accent  :P

Odd, I never interpreted that as Canadian, though I've seen the stereotype so many times before.  I'm also thinking that the English voice actor didn't give Heiji a distinct accent, given that it's *sometimes* badly recieved by fans, especially looking at dubs of Love Hina, Sailor Moon (the DiC version, that is), Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Hellsing.  Attempts to substitute accents, dialects, or speech quirks in English dubs don't seem to be favorably remembered/recieved as far as I can tell.  Either that, or a forced, unnatural accent might hinder making Heiji able to be taken seriously in certain situations, though Heiji's meant to be somewhat easygoing and silly at times.

That aside, while I really don't have much of a problem with the changes made to the series in both animated and comic form, a few of name changes still sit funny with me to this day.  Harley's is one of them.  Couldn't they have just made it 'Harvey' or something?  At least that sounds a little more masculine.

Weird, Heiji's (I will NOT say Harley) voice sounds almost EXACTLY like what I imagined back when I just found out about the English dub so.... it's weird.  :-\

Yeah, the bloopers are the best part of the dub.  It's unfortunate funi doesn't put them on the season sets, as they're definitely the best part.
