"You have received a gold dollar".....wait, what?

Post by Kor »

Ok, my german grandmother (who is a proof that the devil exists) gave me a gold dollar coin, and even after googling it, I'm not sure what it means.
So, what the hell is it?
Does it have any value?
And how do I eat it?

Does it have Sacajawea on it and look like this?  If so, it's a normal dollar, but in coin form.

Uhm, try to ask at the bank? Not sure, but it probably is worth more than a normal dollar coin, heh. Besides, during this financial crisis, people want to pull you into investing in gold, so I guess that's what she did for you? Because the worth of gold should remain high (unless everyone starts investing in it xD) while the worth of the dollar still is going down. I'm not an economy freak, and certainly not in investments (that's the equivalent of gambling to me), so maybe someone else who is interested in and knows a lot about those things should answer here ...

Anyway, it comes down to this: she gave you some pocket money which won't decrease in worth as fast as the dollar does, and she's expecting you to spare it and exchange it for money when the price for gold is at its peak. You'll have to guess when that peak comes 'though, it's kind of like an investment. :P

/edit: or it's just a normal American dollar as GinRei said, and is actually made from copper. That's also possible ^^

Sacajawea dollars are the only form of currency (at least in America) where when you give one to someone, they'll go "aw, man"

it's almost as bad as buying something in pennies. Almost.

note how I said at least in America. I'll admit I'm ignorant of the currency situation over in europe, and all your different currencies and euros and whatever that situation is. :P

I thought the pound was the only non-euro currency left in the EU?

Well, the only difference between the Euros of different countries is the obverse side of the coins. Even Maltese coins will be accepted everywhere. There used to be 10DM-coins, they were legal tender as well, but the collector's value is of course bigger. They might be different to get accepted.

But hell, some stores still accept Deutschmark, even if they're not required to.

@Ginrei: No, the Scandinavian countries still have their own currencies and only a few Eastern European members have met the requirements to introduce the Euro.

Yep, we, Denmark and Norway have our own currency. Also I think Norway isn't even part of EU.
